Sony's new image sensor can shoot 1080p @ 1,000fps video thanks to on-chip RAM

07 February 2017
In an industry first, Sony created a 3-layer image sensor that also improves still image quality.

Trent, 07 Feb 2017Yeah people like you will spend money and buy a stand alone... moreTry to buy a dSLR- then you will see smartphones will never be a match for them. Profi compact or dSLR/mirrorless have huge sensor and dedicated image processor. The latter two have also interchangable lens which make them even more versatile. Ofcourse phones are good enough for such undemanding users like you but for me it's only enough for a few happy selfies or quick shots for social net sharing

Zahin, 07 Feb 2017You people do know that NO display on can play more than 24... moreThat short 4-second 960fps burst is playbacked on 15fps.

I think sony should get someone to advice him at new ideas. As sony fan here is my advice. Flat screen without bezel six inch, add stylus, zeiss optic with new sensor, big battery pack. Sony should keep best sensor only for xperia phones. Keep design, it is special, because other phones almost look the same. And dont stop making phones. Sony go!

        Meh....
In a year or two maybe.

You people do know that NO display on can play more than 240fps, right?(240fps on the most expensive gaming monitors, whereas most of the other displays can play only 60fps)

You know why? It's because the maximum frames a display can show is never higher than it's refresh rate. Meaning, if you play a 120fps video on a 60hz monitor, you'll only see 60fps.

If This is rumored Imx400 on XZ premium, it will rock!
            Fastest autofocus
            Fastest shutterspeed
            4k at 60fps
            Fhd at 1000fps

Hope sd835 will be enough for this monster camera

Ofc they not gonna have any problem, because DRAM is this sensor has ony 125MB (1 Gb) of memory for 1000fps slowmo stream- aprox. 4 seconds of slowmo. So this technology is limited by potential huge amount of data that CPU will have to process latter to create a 1080p video with more than a 10-30s seconds of 1000fps 1080p scene that is playbacked at 15fps. It's awesome indeed but further works is needed. More preferable and useful usage for such sensor is on a slowmo camera.

When we have it on a phone why spend money for a serperate one. Lol I wanna see when Samsung puts this on their phone and aeveryone is suddenly quiet. This is still better than unnecessary eyes scanner, heart rate monitor and air gesturez

tonymancs, 07 Feb 2017It looks cool, but impractical as hell on smartphones- cons... moreDon't worry to the memory card capacity, the 200GB sd card is enough saving all data or you can have 2 or 3 for expand the storage.

It looks cool, but impractical as hell on smartphones- considering huge amount of data proccesor will have to handle and then save on memory/card. A standalone slowmo camera would be cool tho.

Their cameras could improve though..I just don't want oversaturated pictures with fake artifacts like what Samsung phones do.

And then it may deliver the ultimate cameraphone.

It must be offer more and deep planning for their latest Xperias and they will sell expensive to the competitors, because this is exclusive for Sony flagships.

Sony if only u can put better than just usable cameras in ur smartphones... innovating is not a challenge for them. The real challenge for them is to put non grainy cams and cams with no corner softness... ita more like they've found water on mars but not in their backyard

MUCH more interesting than ultrafast video, is that this could allow for a large dynamic range of stills! by back to back multi exposures, with an extremely small delay between the shots.

Especially for phablets with their tiny lenses due to the decreasing thickness, this would be very interesting.

Pixel 2 may get it, and with the unlimited storage it offers, that would be awesome
