Different portion of sensor is used when shooting 16:9(wider view) or 4:3(taller view), this way the field of view and resolution is not wasted thus resulting total of 24.6mp sensor but since the most used is 4:3(at 22.6mp) hence advertised as 23mp
While other brand just crop the image from 4:3 sensor (exp: 12mp 4:3 will be around 9mp in 16:9 + loss of view vertically result from croping)

Anonymous, 27 Feb 2017Pixel/iPhone doesn't have 960fps so they don't even have an... moreThat's funny, I don't remember saying the Piixel or iPhone have 960fps capability, but whatever.....
I have used the SLO-mo capabilities of both the XZ and the IPhone 7 (which also keeps the audio intact) and let me tell you it isn't even close in terms of quality, the iPhone is miles ahead.
Haven't used it myself, but by most experts reckoning the Pixel is just as good and maybe slightly better than the iPhone at slo-mo, other than it the closest other android phone in terms of quality is the Galaxy S7.
According to the article linked below, the amount of time the these new phones can record 960fps is 0.18 seconds, so like I have said, impressive, but limited.

Lex79, 27 Feb 2017Like I said the technical reasoning behind the limitation i... morePixel/iPhone doesn't have 960fps so they don't even have an approach. At lower fps like 120 you can do the same thing and more with Sony as I stated in my first reply. Also Sony keeps the sound. 960fps is something else, you'd need a continuous stream of 960fps to do the timeshift app style editing and at this stage it's not possible.
Check this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-yggmOq6iw couldn't find a newer phone.

Me, 27 Feb 2017The SoC may be powerful enough.. The cam sensor is not.. T... moreYes the hardware within the imx400 makes this possible as it acts as as buffer, but the process is not entirely independent of the SOC, or more specifically the ISP.
