Check out our Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs 960fps slow-mo videos

27 February 2017
Balloons popping, people jumping, all over in a moment as far as the naked eye is concerned. Not Xperia's Motion Eye camera, though.

really cool, but the 960fps time limit brings it down. I hope the final version will offer at least twice of that.
It would also be cool if it could do 120fps or so in normal shooting mode, so that it could be used as a video smoothing effect normally, that then turns in to slow-mo. Combining the two would be really interesting, as that would expand the slow-mo capabilities, even if just parts of it could go super-slow-mo. But it still needs to be capable to record longer sessions of 960fps.
It quite clear in these videos, where the slow-mo cuts of before the action does, even if they do a count down.
Mixing playback speeds is cool, but not when it's as forced as here. Mostly it's used where the action starts off full speed and then slows down, here that would require hitting the 960fps trigger mid action, and that is hard to do.

I'm also worried about the over all image quality, Sony has backed down in resolution, and that gives me some hope that they have understood that they need to work on the per pixel image quality. But there is still the risk that is was done because of the full sensor read-out and that there has been no extra attention to the per pixel performance.

4K screens are nice for VR. So I hope they will offer some kind of VR acessory for this thing.
On the other hand, VR requires higher refresh-rates, so mobile screens are not up to the task, yet.

And I have some issue with Sony.
Sony has a lot of power when it comes to setting the BluRay specs.
Ultra HD blurays lack 3D support (it is possible to have a 1080p 3D version on the disc, but players are not required to play that back), and that seems really strange, when VR glasses finally offers a way to get 3D more widespread (and with full eye separation, it can look much better).
Sonys refreshed Playstation 4 models lack Ultra HD BluRay playback, even though Microsoft offers that in the Xbox One S.
And the Playstation VR can't be used for playback of 3D BluRays.

And they skipped on updating the Z3 to 7.0, even despite the fact it was one of the first phones in the industry, to actually run a version of it.
Normally, I would say that when you buy a phone, you should never expect an update. But the 6.0 update came with some compromises, so I felt let down by it. Googles battery saving stuff wasn't as good as Sonys own, used before that update. Especially when it comes to wifi. They re-introduced a version of the Stamina features, in one update, but that new stamina feature is way behind the old one, and doesn't offer the same wifi-standy.
So since users that wan't to leave wifi on, got much worse batterylife, I think Sony should have given it the 7.0 update as some compensation.
Also, given Sonys track record for updates, and factoring in how long the z3 was sold, for those that bought it later in the life cycle, it did not offer the kind of updating that was expected. In fact at the end of the day, it got less updates than the Samsung Galaxy S5, and a lot of people have been complaining that Samsung are much worse than others when it comes to updates, Sony often got praise for beeing better, as it turns out, they are not.

Other way around is possible tho with the right coding instructions from the sensor maker.
Thats how Sony got a 23 mpx sensor working on sd650 that actually doesnt support 23 mpx.
Thats how Sony can enable 4k recording at 60 fps on sd835 if they wanted.
          But its utter overkill.

But exynos, nah no 4k at 60fps with those old imx and sammys own sensors.
Maybe if they developed more advanced one of their own on Imx400 level.

The cam sensor is not.. Too sad

XZs has imx400 too. The DRAM inside it does the job, not the Snapdragon 835.

Without DRAM the sensor cannot do it.

Me, 27 Feb 2017You wishHe's right, that ability is listed in the specs of the new 8895. Whether that ability is actually enabled and utilised in whatever devices it end up in is another question.

Recording 4K @60fps is likely to generate a substantial amount heat on a smartphone even if the soc is capable of supporting it.

Thats why they keep 960 fps at HD only too.

Other than that, even dedicated cameras do lower resolution to achieve hfr. And even the RX100 has only 2 second hfr limit. This is a smartphone you shouldn't expect longer footage and even if it did, it'd probably take long to process and edit. From what I've seen you choose the hfr part while recording. It'll take some trial and error but you can slow whichever part you want this way with only a second time limit. And it's perferctly reasonable at this form facotr as I've explained.

I get why its happening this way in the new devices as it's dependant on the extra hardware in the camera set up. All I'm saying is that as an end user, the functionality of this is limited.
