Microsoft resumes the February WP7 update for Samsung phones

03 March, 2011
It looks like Microsoft has ironed out the issues that plagued the first update for their WP7 mobile platform. The issues that lead to bricking of some Samsung Omnia 7 units are now taken care of and the...

CJSparrow, 05 Mar 2011hi PerTech i don't own a WP7 device but according to this ... moreThat sounds a little better CJ!

As far as numbers are concerned it isn't competing with Android or iPhone yet. I definitely believe it will though and I don't think it will take long either. If Microsoft are serious about entering the phone market and decide that they want to push this I think they will grow very rapidly over the course of the next year or two.

As it is now there are certainly a few things that it needs to add. The app store is growing very rapidly but some of the major apps (Skype has been mentioned here) are yet to make the transition. I'm waiting for the SkySports app personally! But future updates will add more and I'm keen to see the development process unfold.

As far as not buying now is concerned well that depends on which way you look at it. The more people join the revolution, the faster that revolution will be successful if you follow my meaning. More sales will mean a more serious product for the company to invest in. Thats how the whole business works. If iPhone sales had been shocking, Apple would never have followed it up!

I'm very happy with my Omnia 7 right now, despite the update issue last month (now fixed). Most surprising for me was its ease of use. My dad (70 years old and one of the biggest technophobes in the known universe) used it last week and was navigating it comfortably within 1 hour. My 2 year old has also been using it with ease! A great starting block from MS that shows that, even though its not there yet, they CAN produce a good mobile OS.

i don't own a WP7 device but according to this ridiculously long list of feature requests here, WP7 doesn't have manual bightness controls . . .

        http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-wptips/the-windows-phone-7-feature-request-suggestion/90369a37-02fa-4e92-b0f6-71584a9cadd5

actually brightness control is not my main concern ... but full TCP/IP API/Interface and full VPN support is !

and as long as there is no skype for WP7 a lot of people aren't going to buy one ...

i'm a microsoft fan. i know they've put a lot of effort into creating a reliable and fast Mobile OS. i know WP7 has the potential to compete with iphone and android (it's not at the moment!! ). but at this moment i see no reseaon to buy a WP7 device just as microsoft sees no reason to have a grand opening for their mobile OS yet.

              windows 7

              No Copy/Paste
              No Multitasking
              No State Retention
Default Media Player and Media Transfer
              Weak Social Integration
              Marketplace Search

              iphone 4

Hardware design is prone to reception issues
              MicroSIM card support only
No Flash support in the web browser
No true multitasking for all applications
FaceTime video calls work only over Wi-Fi
No file transfer over Bluetooth or USB Mass Storage mode
No hardware shutter key for the camera
              No FM radio
              No stereo speakers
              No microSD card slot
              No smart dialing
Too dependent on iTunes for loading multimedia content
              Poor loudspeaker performance

              Android

Android is an open source platform driving all Android phones, it could significantly increase the risk of hacking these devices. If this happens, then locking mobiles as a security measure will be a mockery.

                    - Settings > Brightness. Done.
                    - Camera shutter sound . Use phone in silent mode and it switches off. Done.
                    - Playlists can be edited using Zune. Hardly a major problem. Done.
                    - Battery charge in percentage? Thats a straw clutcher if ever I saw one! You have an Icon that tells you how full or empty the battery is. Use it. Done.
                    - More apps? Its grown by about 5000 over the last month or two! Its growing rapidly and at the rate its growing now it will surpass Nokia's Ovi and possibly android too by the summer. Done!
                    - Custom ringtones is hardly a new issue. No one stopped buying iPhones despite the fact that they had the same issue for a LONG time!

All the other features that other phones have? It is extremely useable and is a great starting point for Microsoft. Further updates are required to add more bits but, again, iPhone carried on selling and was lauded despite its early frailties. It will improve greatly over the coming year (as long as MS are prepared to listen and learn) and, in my opinion, will be seen as a major player over the next 12 to 18 months.

The update issue has also been dealt with. Downloaded and installed today with no issues at all....

AnonD-37, 03 Mar 2011True. At least the updates don't have to take months before... moreVERY TRUE,android phones take very much time on updating ,nokia and apple are very fast in giving updates and listening to customers,i hope sony becomes the best company who can give faster updates then other companies because they delayed update very much last year,by the way when next year windows phones or MICROKIA comes out ,i will be buying those phones ,i have xperia x8 and i must say the experience of video and audio is great on my xperia x8 but when it comes to android it sucks big time and same stands for all android phones ,they suck big time because they got outdated theme ,there is just no style or anything in androids and they eat battery of the phone like a monster ,i mean if a person wants video and audio playback for 24 hours or more in his android phone ,it just becomes impossible to do that, android eats so much battery that you just need to keep on charging it,symbian and java were much better in terms of stability and eating less battery ,and i from the bottom of my heart want android to get lost from the market and let windows phone 7 and symbian rule the world ,i am eagerly waiting for nokia windows phones
