10 March 2017
The SoC will have 12 cores and could be another installment of the Helio X-series.

Qualcomm cant underestimate Mediatek from now, they are serious Competitor since 4-5 years and now they will become more serious.

I can see brand like LeEco, Gionee, Meizu, ZTE will get their hands on this new chipset immediately after released just to get publicity. They always want to be first doing something.

Grand Prime Plus uses a low end very sh*tty MTK chip, because it is meant to be a very sh*tty device, not because of the lack of other SoC's available, what you are saying doesn't make any sense.

AnonD-314089, 10 Mar 2017Meizu uses Exynos under license of Samsung. The demands for ... moreNope, the reason why Samsung had Snapdragon variant is because there are LOTS OF PEOPLE (WESTERN, MOSTLY, America specifically) WANTS THEIR FLAGSHIP using SNAPDRAGON, cuz they think Snapdragon is BETTER than Exynos or ANY of ASIAN-made SoC. Well, basically, unconsciously SD fanboy.

Samsung using MediaTek is NOT because of HIGH DEMAND BS that u think of. It's because of COST PRODUCTION. ALL of Mediatek's SoC have GREAT specs by default YET it is CHEAPER THAN THEIR OWN LOW-END EXYNOS which is SUCKS (they even use Mali T830mp2, lower than already low T860mp2 in MediaTek SoC!), so it is natural they will use MediaTek SoC to make the production & manufacturing cost as LOW as possible & SELL is as EXPENSIVE as possible (Samsung still regard MediaTek SoC as "2nd option").

FYI, if Samsung wants to make CHEAP device, they will use SPREADTRUM SoC, the VERY LOW-END SoC available today (who in 2016/2017 still use Cortex A7 combined with Mali-400 to make 4g-capable SoC? only SPREADTRUM)

AnonD-314089, 10 Mar 2017Sorry, my friend, but Exynos is exclusive of Samsung, cre... moreNope, Exynos SoC isn't EXCLUSIVE at all. It is the same as Mediatek, Qualcomm, NVidia, and Intel SoC, sold to other manufacturers to keep their semiconductor business growing.
Don't belive what I said? Look for Meizu's flagship phone. Most of it used Exynos SoC (few used MediaTek), and HAVE BEEN using it since THE FIRST TIME THEY RELEASED Android phone in 2012 (Meizu MX, Exynos Dual Core Cortex A9).

What I see exclusive are HiSilicon, Apple, & Xiaomi's pinecone SoC so far.

In Apple's case, since their SoC is custom core made EXCLUSIVELY & EFFICIENTLY for running iOS, MANY believed it was no match for Android SoC in terms of multitasking & multi-core performance, as they focused on making powerful SoC for single-core performance, which means multitasking that occurred in iOS actually "pseudo multitask", means when u are switching from X app to Z apps, they "suspend" the process of X app & save it temporarily in the RAM, and "continue" the process again when u done using the Z app & back to X app.
In short, all the "fluid" which occurs in iOS is the result of "pseudo-multitask" which heavily relies on the free memory available in the RAM; no wonder Apple's old iphone (1st to 5th) which had "meager" RAM won't feel "fluid" at all when used to multitask few apps at the same time for several time.

For HiSilicon's case, their previous SoC are mixed bag; it did have great CPU performance, BUT their GPU config SUCKS; very similar to MediaTek's "Good CPU, weak GPU" formula.
Moreover, there are LOTS of "gimmicks" not available in previous HiSilicon SoC, such as NO 4K recording and NO fast charging support, which for MANY, is deal-breaker, especially for people who wants a flagship phone with ALL the "gimmicks" available in their phone.

This is the MAIN reason, aside from closed kernel source, that NO OTHER MANUFACTURERS ever think to use HiSilicon for their device; it just won't sell well since they won't get all the "gimmicks" available in Snapdragon or Mediatek SoC without additional costs (for fast charging, they need to add their own "fast charging" method or have to licenced other company's fast charging tech which cost A LOT)

For Xiaomi's pinecone SoC, it is a NEW SoC, so until it shows how capable its SoC, both flagship & mid-range ones, manufacturers will be happy to use Snapdragon, MediaTek, or Exynos (Intel's x86 solution is no match to ARM Cortex, it just won't deliver high performance while keep the low-energy usage as well as ARM Cortex does; even Snapdragon's Scorpion, Krait & Kyro 100 can't match ARM's energy-efficient referenced core, the reason why SD835 uses semi-custom core license from ARM.

Not even about Moore's Law but we're also hitting the bottom end of the physics limit of semiconductor downsizing. To become a semiconductor, you need a specific proportion of impurities (usually Gallium or Arsenic) on the silicon, but at these sizes it's almost getting to the point where you're counting the atoms on the transistor, and with that few atoms on it, you'll not have a semiconductor at all, the impurity ratio will be too high or nonexistent.

This makes me wonder how they're even getting the 7nm, and it's no wonder the 10nm has terrible yield.

There is not much diff... moreYou are right about the fact that an old flagship is better than a new midranger.(which are made more of a marketing strategy to promote though contrast the flagship and to give the illusion of multiple choices ).
But 10nm brings some changes "with 27-percent higher performance or 40-percent lower power consumption". I think Snapdragon chose the lower consumption route and it might be a wise decision, to kill once and for all the throttling. Anyway, even if they would have used the performance route the CPU would have been still miles behind A10 Fusion... So at least we should have 2 days of battery life and no throttling.
