Though I see optimizing and specs as a 50/50 deal. Both done equally well is the best experience

Anonymous, 19 Mar 2017Everyone cares if a phone works or not, we both agree there... moreBeing under contract in most places of the world means paying ultra pricey your phone. Also even with buying the phone under contract it still makes sense to not be trashed afterwards as you can give it away (to a friend or family) or sell it. If the hardware is sh*t from the get go forgetaboutit... in 2 years time it will be irrelevant.
Longevity is a good feature to have although I understand not a must for some people. Still there *has to* be something other than device longevity that you care about it. Well, whatever it is , it can be given with better hardware mostly and only some of the times with better software.
Good software is king, but it is so ubiniquitous that hardware ends up to be the differentiating factor.

Anonymous, 19 Mar 2017Specs are just as importantWrong! Specs are more important. Optimizations are widely copied so all phones end up with the same optimizations after some patching.
That's why I called software a level play field. The only differentiating factor is hardware, and better hardware *consistently* works faster.

Try to encode anything on A10 or run a cpu heavy emulator and see it *destroy* the weak android cores. Geekbench 3 was rigged to show weak-a$$ small mobile cores on par with wide Ax or desktop cores. Geekbench 3 was ridiculous stop referencing it.
GB4 is not much better but it at least tries to be closer to reality...

krystian, 19 Mar 2017My point is exactly that though. If a company is using IOS... moreWell for raw performance in single apps single threaded performance should be more important.
But in multitasking lots of threads will help.

If a company is using IOS as a base, implementing multiple cores is extra work and extra debugging and testing. Chances are it will still run just as well on Android. The bottom line is that people are ragging on Apple that their non-apple chips are way faster in multi-core. In the real world outside of benchmarking it probably doesn't make much of a difference.

(I am under a contract, so right away our view of phones are different. I don't really care what happens to a phone after 2 years - I only care that it lasts that long.)

Geekbench 3 was built in an era with different needs. Where mobile SoCs could not take heavy workloads and thus it was creating disparate results.

Obviously amdahl is still in affect, but most non-trivial apps can /should be well threaded, and having the language support for coroutines makes it even easier (who wants to build a state machine from primitives if they don't have to?).

krystian, 18 Mar 2017Yes the operating system, but not all apps are going to use... moreMost apps are more multithreaded now that before.
Also the most used android apps are often Google apps. Things like Gmail, chrome browser, maps are all Google apps and often used more than other apps. So already you get great multithread apps. Add to that we'll written apps and you already can use your core count very well ... suddenly your phone's multithread score is the important metric.

Anonymous, 18 Mar 2017Finally, somebody who gets it.
My goodness, these fanboy... moreHe doesn't get it. There is a reason why phones get slow or battery die.
most of the time times the reason has little to do with those scores. It has to do with OS arch and in the case of android with ram amount (low ram phones get trashed very fat after a few months of use).
For battery similar reasons. Phones with non removable batteries lose autonomy faster because you can't simply pop a new unused battery in them (in any manner that is easy).
So yes some of those things matter, because they *lead* to people seeking a new phone sooner or later. My Note 4 with plenty of ram (of its time) and swappable battery still goes great. If instead was only 2GB of ram and sealed battery it would be trash already... specs matter where people know about them or not...
