21 March 2017
After years of front-mounted fingerprint readers, Galaxy users will have to get used to its new location on the back.

Uncomfortable? Yes. Impractical? No. Let's just get back to swipe lock and use fingerprint reader for Samsung pass and other apps that support it. I don't see the problem here. However, so far I stay with my S7 edge.

oh come on..grow up...i heard all these camera smudging problems when i bought the n8 too...the problem is, the position of the lens is where a person's index will be when taking a call...we changed the grip as the phones got bigger...seems the readers here are too young to remember

Samsung must've been stupid to put the fingerprint reader there. Not only are you gonna smudge your camera lense, but it's so uncomfortable! Trying it out on my old S5 and new Pixel XL (that are supposed to be relatively the same size as the S8 and S8+), you need to hold the phone in an unusual position to reach it! Sure, there may be some error, but why couldn't they have just put it under the camera?

The fingerprint sensor placement does not only look stupid but also is impractical. It reminds me of Samsung's old design language seen on S3, E5 and so on. All these 3 could have been placed in vertical order with a ring for aesthetic purpose as was done by Lenovo on Vive X3, K4 Note or to some extent by Samsung themselves on Note 3.

It appears the majority of you commenting are disregarding the iris scanning capabilities, which will render the fingerprint scanner mostly redundant other than as a back up option or for payment verifications.

Cant wait to hear them explain the positioning.. We put it way up there to to make it difficult to reach & allow you to smudge up your camera lens too!

AnonD-654535, 21 Mar 2017my s7 edge is pretty laggy and buggy at times, much more th... moreyes it is ... software on Samsung phones is just crap .... had S5 and it was OK .. had Note 5 and that was a disaster ... so much lag that it was unbearable in the end I sold the phone... try rebooting more often ,that doesn't solve the lag issue but it is a lot more usable if you do that every few days . or you could try to flash a new firmware .

AnonD-618398, 21 Mar 2017This is not very ideal! Come on Samsung! What's so hard ab... moreIts not that hard if they had more time. The original plan was to have an embedded fingerprint sensor under the screen. But that plan got scrap out last minute before mass production due to it being unreliable and not ready. Synaptics still working on perfecting the embedded fingerprint sensor.

There probably accuracy problem occuring during testing the embedded fingerprint sensor. Due to last minute changes they have to put in at the rear while keeping the front as bezel less as possible. They probably came across a problem while trying to place it below the camera as that is where the battery placement is. With no other space to spare the answer is to put it beside the camera.

they'd HAVE to reshape the battery for one and they'd like to play that safe..so something like the s7/s7edge battery would be ideal.

Fortunately they didn't use a circle.

I hope the fingerprint scanner is at least always on, so you can put your phone face down and align your finger with the reader while lifting it from wherever is resting.
