Raphi7, 05 Apr 2017So true but i think some OEMs have the budget to atleast m... moreThat's what people said about Apple back in '08-'09, when Android was in it's infancy and Samsung was a low quality device producer. Same was said about Nokia and Motorola as well in their heyday. Marketing isn't everything. While it plays a large role, it isn't the only thing that defines sales. The also-ran companies sometimes produce great devices, and can make a big difference if they know how to capitalize on the inertia of a good product. For example, HTC One M7, LG V20, Sony Xperia Z, Motorola Z
HTC failed horribly to capitalize on the success of original HTC One, and screwed up with M8 and M9. M10 is too little too late to stop the bleeding.
LG - we'll see how they capitalize on it with V30, but looking at the G6, i'm not keeping my hopes up.
Sony - Z5 is a stale version of Z1 at this point, and it doesn't seem like Sony is putting in much effort.
Motorola - Z modular phone is a good idea, that might just have it's niche. I was waiting for a good camera mod, but instead we got a Hasselblad branded and priced half-baked attempt. Hopefully they'll add a mod along the lines of Sony RX100 advanced compact. We'll also see how the Z2 will play out this year.
And then there's HMD this year with a Nokia reboot. We'll just see how it plays out for them with Nokia 9, or whatever the top model will be called.

Yup and half of this number is probably the cost of damage control after Note 7 fiasco.

When you pay enough to flood the market with advertisements, your name starts to become the only thing people see. This is why most consumers these days only know "iPhone" or "Galaxy", or at least from what I've encountered in recent years. Advertising works. The other competitors sadly can't invest that giant sum into marketing as well to properly compete against them.

I guess bribery expense goes under marketing for accounting purposes.

Anonymous, 05 Apr 2017Are You kidding??Absolutely wrong. Apple make that profit in single qtr. educate yourself

Well, How else would they sell so much of refurbished stale flagships with updated screens only for 1000$ - 1200$, or quite underwhelming low midrange A series for 300-500$ to people?
Thats why their profit per sold phone is ridiculously low...
But, they get away with those worst bang for buck products by selling en mass, so profits seep in.
