i don't care much how big is internal memory or fast it is..when the phones die you also lose everything inside it.my microsd 64gb that i buy in 2013 still work fine.from that year untill today i think ive change almost 20 phones but never change my microsd..as i im type of person who loves changing custom roms and many2 times bricked my phones thats a pros for microsd because when i reset,flash rom,brick,bootloop i never worried my data,files,images cause everything inside my microsd :D so if im gonna buy next phone i will making sure that the phones can read my data to microsd as dont trust to much with internal storage and cloud storage.

Try put everything on 2GB memory card.

The flash memory is unreliable. The higher the capacity, the shorter the lifespan. Because to achieve that much capacity, they store 2-3 bits per memory cell (MLC, TLC) which wear out much faster than SLC flash storage (that's why SLC has lower capacity, but better lifespan).

Oh yeah.. the infrared file transfers... lol my phn was 6230 may be.. don't remember exactly.. had 3310,2600,6600,6610,communicator9300,9500,e90,n70,n73, still have n70 and n8.. I may have missed 4,5 more Nokia phones I owned.. those were bful days.. used to cherish those phones

Sorry but as I know back in 2001 Sony had the CMD-MZ5 with a card slot (memory stick magic gate) capable of 64MB

I think there should've been a reference to the first hard drive ever made, the IBM 5XX. 5MB of storage, as big as a fridge, and costed thousands of dollars. And today we complain about SSD's prices.

I'm happy that storage speeds play a bigger role then storage capacity at the moment. They are a bottleneck for the powerful CPUs we have in phones, so this should bring massive speed improvements in the future.

I still remember the first camera phones, which had sub 1mb of storage for everything and there was no wishing for expansion. I remember hoping to get the Nokia 6230 with a MMC card storing whopping 32mb of photos and music. Ah, those were the days.

Please write more of these "counterclockwise" articles. Explore topics, maybe do one general, than spread to explore some specific parts, details, options. Something like a family tree. These are very pleasant to read, because they takes some of us to our teenage days, when we were happy to play Nokia's Snake, send funny SMS messages and still not be obsessed with FB, Insta, selfies and all the other narcissistic stuff people do nowadays. We were happy just to have the most basic phones.

Used to think how having a 512MB MMC was awesome. Back in 2003-04, when I had Nokia's impeccable 6600. Fun times, good memories.

Meh, back in 2004 I had Siemens CX65 that had only 11MB storage and I managed to put there WHOLE 90min movie compressed at 3gp format at 120x160 resolution, cutted from credits and intro, and send via Infrared port... oh those times...
Then I got SE k750i and I spend damn 40euro on 128MB card(Stick Duo Pro) and I literally didnt know what to do with all this space -_-

I focused on storage sizes >1GB (especially internal storage) and that is why neither of those made the cut.
