Counterclockwise: monster-sized screens, the early days

Did you know that the Nokia 9000 Communicator had a 4.5" screen... in 1996!

I remember the first time I saw the Z Ultra from Sony. It looked massive compared to the other phones on display at the time. Then other companies followed suite, and now it's the norm.

I do get why some people like big screens, but it annoys me that the sub five inch market is so small.
Astounds me it's harder to get a sub 5 incher than a 6 inch plus phone today.

I've been waiting for the successor, i mean, the "ultra" hype which is a summation of a flagship+slim phone+waterproof+huge screen+ great battery back up. But then again, sony kinda shipped phones like that but with mid-range chipsets and its a drawback for me. I dont want it.

Z Ultra was the best. I bought one and the phone is still going strong after all these years, no problems. It was years ahead of its time.

"Advantage, but at least the hardware keyboards have disappeared - phones were looking like phones again rather than mini laptops."

I liked the mini laptop. Or ar least some of them, with sliding qwertys.
If the screen is supported by the keyboard, it is actually possible to walk and have an Idea of where you are, and still type.
The typing speeds for most people are much quicker, and the experience much better.
With better typing on smartphones, the word would win back some of its meaning. Now it is all about reactions/emojis, as no one really likes to type on touchscreens.
People press like on everything, but if the normal thing was to write a comment when you liked something, we would start seeing what people actually bothers to like..

And "looking like phones", well that depends on what you think a phone should look like.
Todays smartphones do no look like phones. They look like generic touchscreen smartphones, but not like any phone that came before that.
If qwerty keyboards would become all the rage, then that would be the new look of phones.

The issue with keyboard phones is that they can't be made slim enough.

I have high hopes for the Agumented reality phone of the future where it would be possible to have passive keyboards with tactile keys, but where the AR equipment reads the hand movement to register ones typing. And where any language or any short cuts can be "projected" on to the keys.

I had a PDA that I have really fond memories of, despite of how horrible it was compared to today's smartphones. There sas just nothing comparable at that time and everyone was so shocked that such things existed, as they were rocking black and white feature phones, I had a color touch screen that I could run simplified Windows software on. Those were the times. Anyone saying the iPhone started it, I laugh at.

My first "smartphone" was the Dell Streak 5. LOVED IT!
I remember the looks I got from people who would always say THAT is your PHONE?
At the time, the iPhone (3.5" screen) was pretty much the king of the hill.
I won't go for ANY phone with a screen less than 6" today. The older you get the bigger
                            the screen ;)

i lovedthe streak... every person thought i was a stupid... an odd buy having a 5inch phone..... then i also bought the mega 6.3 but i had to step back...6.3 were too much big, i think the perfect size is 5,7 or 6 inches.
