The iPhone 7 with its 4.7" display outsells all other smartphones including the 5.5" iPhone 7 Plus. You can't ask this poll and leave out the screen size of the best-selling smartphone in the options.

I agree what someone said below me. Screen size doesn't matter as much as device size.
I currently own a Z5 and the screen size if perfect for me. (5.2")
But either the Galaxy S8 or the LG G6 would be perfect for me as it's reachable for me in all aspects. The phones aren't wide that make it reachable for me and make me confident when using it.
So, screen size isn't really a question but rather the device length and width.

5.5 inch. Big screen and not too hard to put in pocket.
5.7/6.0 inch can be do-able with small bezels too

5.1" is the ideal size for a normal smartphone; 5.5" for a phablet. Or basically, the S7/S7 edge sizes.

I'd like a 4 inch smartphone. At the most 4.5 but such are not easy to find and even if there are, they're low end and cheap. Good that there are a few companies like Apple and Sony which still have compact, premium smartphones with high end specs.

There is no ideal size, one persons ideal is anothers hate. So its good there are many different sizes. i just hate it that the flagships are getting bigger and using size as a way of telling you this is more powerful. Weight also plays a part, anything over 150g is too heavy imo, makes your pants sag down and arm ache after you have held it to your ear for more than a few minutes.
It does seem any screen under 5" is classed as small and a screen over 6" big, so that would say anything in the middle of that is the average.

I think that the question should be about the size of the smartphone as a whole, rather than what you asked. For example, the Xperia Compact is smaller than the iPhone 7, much more than the 0,1'' creen difference can suggest.

How about more than one ideal size? I have size 10 hands. I can't type on anything smaller than 5,5", and a 6" or larger phone would be ideal. But I cannot imagine a malnourished Ganghes water drinker would be comfortable with a phone that size.

Anonymous, 14 May 2017Screen size doesn't matter, device size matters. For exa... more^^ We have a winner. Screen size isn't the issue... it's the width of the device that matters. Anything wider than 70mm and it becomes uncomfortable to hold for average size hands. The larger they can fit a screen in that sized body the better, but keep it under 70mm width.

They should ask what's the ideal phone size as we have smartphones like S8 which provides 5.8 inch display in a smartphone which isn't bigger than 5 inch phones from other brands. It's about weight too, S8 gives 5.8 inch display in 150g, iPhone 7+ is 5.5 inch display in 200g body. Practically magic?
