I present you the S8.
The first phone to only make one major change and even that being of dubious use (taller screen / diff looks).
Basically same performance(Exynos 8895 vs Exynos 8890 + same amount of Ram)
*Less* battery life
*Slower* unlock (back fingertip, face unlock or retina unlock are all quite slower than front fingertip , and since unlocking is what people mostly do with their phone it's a big deal)
Same camera quality (give or take) according to Dx0 mark
BTW the dubious aspect ratio to many it's also a problem, it eliminated one handed use and added ugly black bars to a good amount of content
So, no, no rat race to be found here, only some good old fashioned milking...

How is this news? Most companies plan their products with at least 18 months before launch.
I really don't care about smartphones anymore, so a jack-less iPhone 7s and 8 or another curved display S9 doesn't interest me much. I surprisingly want an APPLE WATCH Series 2! I used to think smartwatches are useless but I need a GPS on my wrist during my DoorDash delivery times when Google Maps voice navigation sends me to the wrong direction which happens like 10%-15% of the time.
Apple Watch with sapphire crystal is now on my wishlist. Another annual, incremental upgrade of a smartphone is not on my radar I have like five 2016 phones that can last me 5-10 years if I wanted. A smartwatch is something a little different. You come to realize smartphones are just gimmicks too and a waste of money upgrading every year or two with not much else in useful improvements. Becoming stale.

Gsmarena says S8 has 14 hours less battery than S7E and S8+ 10 hours less. I trust gsmarena.
Lastly the fingerprint was moved to the back = useless to many people
Tell me again how S8 is better. They didn't even bother upgrading the hardware. Smallest upgrade of hardware ever. Before S8 they would add 40% more performance every generation (exynos variant). With S8 it stopped. First phone that does not upgrade the raw performance , that's a sign ... Not a very good one.

Daylighy foto hard to notice any improvemnet, but in low light s8 significant better, even htc 11 that dxomark score higher than s8 doesnt look better to bring out highlight in the sceene (read gsmarena s8 vs htc11)

Taller screen and nothing else ... Like literally. Same screen width, same screen density, a few gimmicks here and there that nobody is going to use (BT 5, retina scan, face scan), same camera quality (according to Dx0 mark) , basically same performance (Exynos 8895 has 5% over Exynos 8890 ... like literally, same amount of ram too).
Only big differentiation is the less battery (S7E is king there ... Easily) and awkward fingertip placement...
Hence the low sales (5 million is what Apple calls a "Tuesday").

Maybe this means they will have the time to properly optimize the gpu so it doesn't drop frames scrolling apps while the "inferior" 821-powered Pixel runs renders butter smooth 60-fps. (source: google arstechnica s8, bottom of page 5).
Ah, who am i kidding, this is big S. Who cares about optimization when you have shiny curved glass? Only nerds care about performance.
