Google facing a lawsuit over Android location tracking

01 May, 2011
It appears that Google are to suffer the same troublesome press as Apple have of late, due to the discovery of an Android based tracking system, not too dissimilar to the one recently brought to light on the iPhone 4....

AnonD-291, 01 May 2011There's no hypocrisy. Android tracking NOT the same as how ... moreWell,
many comments on here lack a lot of knowledge. However, even if you don't use GPS, Google's location services will still locate you pretty accurate, based on your IP address and cell phone towers. In fact, this is even more accurate than GPS!

Now,
It is a fact that your IP address gets recorded along with other information, so, your 'annonymized' personal information are not as annonym as you would expect. :)

As the spokesman said, they do provide a notice and control over the collection, sharing and use of location data... We can even turn that off in Android devices (I use Galaxy S). Even if enable this feature Google will send you emails periodically saying our location information is tracked... I think these people who sued Google, trying to make a fool out of them...

Truth be told Android and MacOS for the mobile phones, along with Windows 7 are the best things that could happen to mobile phones... take that and combine it with powerful processors and a whole array of gadgetry (GPS, powerful graphics, large yet to fit in your pocket) make your mobile phone basically the desktop you had at work 4 years ago... still, i'd go for the old "own interface and somewhat of a OS" for the mobile phones... Before Windows Mobile, Mac OS and modified linux distributions we had the old Symbian which was the ultimate s*&^ in mobile phones and the own branded SE, Samsung, Motorola etc interfaces that had never had the issues of tracking or storing all your life on them and so on and so forth... i think mobile operating systems make us be extremely mobile, but there's always a price for all that comfort.

AnonD-977, 01 May 2011If ANY mobile phone's location is not being tracked, how do... morePhone networks track everyone , i know that. But they dont sell it (info) to thirdparty or something.
The point is that the way Android tracks is not the same way as iOS does it. In iOS you are forced to share your location. Worse part is that its stored in your iphone and itunes backups in an unencrypted format, easily accessible. In case of android, Google ASKS you whether you want to share info or not ! The logs are deleted as soon as you switch off location services, unlike iOS where its stored for years.

They intend to represent other users who feel they have suffered under the same misdirection in a class-action lawsuit, looking for at least $50 million in damages

so does that mean i get a cut?...probably not. Mostly likely they're more concerned about 50 million. Which is half of what google spent on producing wind farms.

Talking of and worried about tracking? Just stop using any thing electronic that's based on networked computers. This is true of even your ATM card and credit cards. How can these be traced when abused or lost? Anyway there are pro and cons of every system! Take it or leave it, unless you are try to hide.

I think many people here misunderstood the notion "tracking" used. It is not tracking that poses the danger but the collection of data of your location over a period of time and being sent over wirelessly to a third party.

You can track me so that you can provide me relevent information which i wanted to pull from the web, fair enough but if you can track me and keep those data with you for a certain of time, you can practically build a history of my whereabouts and profile my location behaviour. That would be extremely scary scenario, should these information is being misuse and certainly ranked closely to stalking.

Location service is in all smartphone in the world like iOS, Android, (recently announce about WP7 tracking), Meego, and maybe Symbian!! With the new Symbian Anna Os..
Cell phones and gps track u, Mobile carrier track your recent location and recent calls and maybe record them for FBI investigation, security camera, Foursquare, passport database..
All of these make you feel very2 safe except FourSquare

If there are hackers into the system then the troubles begins but Apple Mac system is hard to be hack and infected by virus.. So maybe Apple corp. Is on the safe side..

I hope all these whiners don't mess up A-GPS, A as in ASSISTED by knowing where the phone is in relation to WiFi and phone network towers.

Maybe that's why the Samsung Galaxy S is the way it is, the tracking being so bad is a "feature" to protect users location data by pretending to be somewhere else.
