Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 450: a 14nm process makes it faster and more efficient

28 June 2017
The chip is largely based on the Snapdragon 625, which has made a positive impression in the mid-range.

Qwerty2017, 28 Jun 2017LOL,what is isheep doing in Qualcomm page? Trolling? N... moreAnd there always must be one zealot who will turn the argument in Apple vs Android war.I wanted to say read again carefully what I wrote, but than again you'll miss the point again.
Secondly:
"No way ARM v8 Cortex A53 could have worse performance compared to Cortex A15 custom core."
rock bottom knowledge about how things works...

Anonymous, 28 Jun 2017New processor, but based on old A53...Nerdy pass.. I can agree on this one. In general, I don't understand the sense of pure A53 processors. Of course there are different use cases. If you are on the home screen, you don't need as much performance as if you're opening and using an app heavier than WhatsApp. And those processes may need less power per second, but take more seconds to be done so then you used the same amount of power but much more time which is complete nonsense.
Processors are printed, so I don't think it is much more expensive (if it is more expensive at all) to make an A7X core over an A5X core. The only thing that matters is size, so I'd rather have 1 A7X and 2 A5X cores than 8 A5X cores which are combined probably about the same size. If Qualcomm really wants to make different chipsets for different classes, which in my opinion is still not as smart as just using a little bit older and so cheaper flagship SoC (because R&D isn't needed to do this), they should scale the number of cores, for example
SD2XX: just kill it, nobody wants such bad performing chips
    SD4XX: 1 A7X, 2 A5X
    SD6XX (lower end): 1 A7X, 4 A5X
    SD6XX (higher end): 2 A7X 4 A5X
    SD8XX: 4 A7X 4 A5X

I think a Nokia will want to use 450....with stock android it might be snappy and offer 600 type performance for alot less.

I'm not finding any big difference between SD450 and SD625.. For me except camera and video capability Everything seems to be same. Already moto g5 plus using SD625. So, in future SD450 will give same performance like SD625 @ low cost. That sounds great. Just my opinion after looking at the numbers.
I hope all OEMs just make it one or two entry or budget phones. And give them proper software. I'm really interested in how well OS is optimized than these numbers game. Biggest problem in android mobile manufacturers. I feel like All OEMs just want to throw some garbage at budget users. And let them change mobile if they want OS upgrade. Moto has changed it. Nokia is joining them.. Finally some good things coming to budget mobile users.
Feeling sorry for one plus2 users.. Heard that They won't get update.

Bebe Rexha, 28 Jun 2017SD625 is discontinued? What? Sony used SD820 in 2017 with ... morewho is going to pay approx similar price for SD 625 when you have newer SD 630 .. available for similar price ? and manufacturer simply stops producing those because demand dies/artificially killed so in a sense discontinued .. and they have to fill their production lines with newer versions.. unless their is left over stock or special reasons to continue producing older units like was the case with SD 820 because 835 supply limited . but they aren't going to sell you older 600 series processor at 400 prices.. some discount sure.. or left over stock .. otherwise everybody having budget for SD 400 will buy older SD 600 for marketing and qualcomm will not be able to sell new SD 400 processors..

the point i was making was .. SD 450 and SD 630 are different products at different price points .. pricing dictates everything .. SD 625 will not be available.. it may be same chip as 625 but will be rebranded as SD 430 to not dilute their SD 600 brand and sales margin...

SD 430 was in a similar position last year .. it had approx same performance as SD 615/616 .. but do you find manufacturers using SD 615 instead of SD 430 now ? no because qualcomm will not sell SD 615 at SD 430 prices just like you will not find new"previous gen Intel i7 processors at i5 prices in main consumer market officially ... products are discontinued to sell newer models...

                Well done to Qualcomm.

                  Thanks for the info.

AceShot, 28 Jun 2017You don't know what your r talking about. SD450 is huge ste... moreThat's why I said, it's NUTS!
Why bother buying a SD450-powered device(s) that is "less" capable than SD625-powered?

                    Example: Xiaomi
Why bother buying Mi Pad 3 when Mi Pad 2 with Intel Atom can be urs for cheap now?
Why bother buying Redmi Note 4 SD625 version when u can get Redmi Note 3 SD650 version at cheaper price?
Why bother buying Redmi 5 with SD450 when u can get Redmi 4 Prime with SD625 for less?
Why bother buying Mi Max 2 with SD625 when u can buy Mi Max SD652 with 4GB RAM for cheap (as it's now last-year products, so the product get price slash)?

That's THE QUESTION I get from people who "aware" of the "intentional downgrade" done by the manufacturer(s).
SIMILAR thing also happened to Samsung with their Galaxy Note 4 & S5, which until now, still have many loyal users who "hunt" for another unit.

The most recent one from BRANDED manufacturers is G5. As LG G6 is unexpectedly no better than G5 (worse, in fact), many people try to get their hands on G5 till now, as it is the ONLY flagship smartphone (including V20) that have ALL FEATURES u could think of (removable battery, microSD slot, Radio FM, 3.5mm audio jack, IR blaster, NFC, high-grade DAC, compass).

That's why, until a SoC with Cortex A55 released, it's better if u hold the urge to buy new device(s)
OR just simply buy upper mid-range device(s) with SD650/652/653 or SD820/821, as it won't be affected much by the launch of Cortex A55 next year, unlike ALL lower mid-range & entry-level SoC which use a bunch of Cortex A53 for all the cores.

                      Trolling?

NOPE, U R WRONG BIG TIME, DUDE...

Apple A series processors get BETTER (as well as more battery-eater) SINCE A7 release (iphone 5S), which uses Apple's own 64-bit custom core, instead of ARM 64bit custom core like what they did with ALL their previous A processors (A6 used Cortex A15 custom cores).

So, NO, u are talking BS if u said "Iphone 5 blows this chipsets", as it still use CRAPPY A6 processor, Cortex A15 custom core.

(well, the other reason why 2nd hand iphone 5s is still somewhat expensive caused of this, while iphone 5 and older don't sell at all)

Cortex A15 still use ARM v7 ISA, which means 32-bit.
No way ARM v8 Cortex A53 could have worse performance compared to Cortex A15 custom core.

BTW, ALL Apple A series processors (except A10 & A10x) performance could be achieved by last year Android flagship SoC, while still keeping its power-saving advantages, unlike Apple processors which are battery-eater by default, that's why Apple resorted to add 2 power-saving cores in A10 series
(mind u, A10 & A10X are NOT QUAD CORE, but DUAL CORE with 2 ADDITIONAL CPU designed specifically for POWER-SAVING purposes).

The FUNNY thing about Apple vs. Android products:

Apple: MEDIOCRE specs + Powerful CPU & GPU (but power-hungry) + handicapped OS
Android: GOOD specs + GOOD CPU & GREAT GPU + Flexible, Customize-able, & apps-rich OS (especially for productivity & office)

So, which one MOST people will take?

-) Powerful CPU & GPU which will means NOTHING when coupled with handicapped OS capable of ONLY for MULTIMEDIA purposes, OR

-) Decently GOOD CPU & GPU which means ANYTHING when coupled with forked Linux OS which have HUGE developer community, HUGE apps developer, HUGE user database?

Heck, with Android OS, u can do MOST of the thing u can do with a laptop, as the processors & RAM available for today's Android phone is just ridiculous (SD650 / Helio X20 / Kirin 950 / Exynos 7420 + 4GB RAM are the minimum requirements, though)

25% means a lot , because 1.4Ghz 8 cores and adreno 505 are barely enough for heavy 1080p as of today and upcoming months. It brings 625 to entry level devices. Today the cheapest Redmi 4a is using SD425 or SD430. Next cheapest Xiaomi will be using SD450 which in performance is little behind SD625 but will be better in battery consuption. That's huge improvement over 425 or 430. Next Redmi 5 will be using 630 instead of SD625 and SD660 over 650 so don't worry about it.

S625 never really did belong to mid tire and whose/is still much slower than last years real mid tire S65x one. What we ain't seeing in this year is continue of the class leading SoC that really did change what we consider as the midrange segment the S650 & probably because it cuts all other products a lot, hell we even had to wait for a long time to get the S660 (for similar reasons) which by the way isn't all I whose hoping for.
