Surely if they thought about it they could just give you a fair use policy like they do in uk. your browsing is capped at 500mb if you exceed this limit you get raped on charges. if you want you can use tethering but it will use 500mb quickly.

Thay all have 3g data dongles for laptops that come with a higher priced data plan than the mobile plans. They are protecting that part of the business. It's dumb and they (or at least one of them) should just make these plans the same as mobile phone data plans, but yeah - that's the reason for it. if you can just teather, why buy a laptop dongle?

if you know a little linux and have rooted your phone, you can still route your ppp connection through the wireless with just a little effort:
ifconfig, a few iptables commands, enable ipv4_forward and install dnsmasq or a dhcp server and it's done. did not test this, btw.

In Russia you just can't do that. That's a pure violation of Consumer Protection Law, Civil Code and some federal rules.

not that i am on the networks side but i understand them
cdma networks are offering unlimited data plans.
but they should block tethering only for those unlimited data plans
here in Europe the gsm networks are offering unlimited data plans for much more expensive and few people have unlimited data plans

Flash your phone and get the functionality back...
Also those letters will be based on admitting to support or over usage, they can't detect it otherwise.

Good that it isn't blocked here in Belgium because I mostly use the Tehtering function to allow the mmi of my Phaeton to access the web.
If it were to be blocked the built in system of my car would be useless.

what is the real reason why they wont let you tetereding?
do carriers worry that too many people start to share their internet connection. Like a guy go in bar and start to broadcast internet all around?
if millions of people start to do the same thing,i guess many people will look for this cheap way to get free internet.
am I right?

i am a optus dealer in australia and on ... more@Aussie Dealer; remember, we used to charge for tethering as well.
Tethering operates through a different port to normal handset browsing. This doesn't use more bandwidth, but does use more of the carrier's resouces.

By the way, what would happen, if I take my unlocked Android phone from a different country to US and say, pop in an AT & T SIM. Will they still block tethering

that is not cool,
i am a optus dealer in australia and on some plans you get about 3GB and optus do not care what you do with it as long as you pay the bills. why would people get a fone with a data plan if they can not tether. it is a great app for when you are out with your laptop and you want to search the web.
they just want more and more money...
