The company is steering away from Samsung’s dominance of the 2018 iPhone after setting up an R&D line for OLED displays.

Typical, nothing new, soon they will probably provide all parts by themself, only they will need to pay for foxconn to assemble It. Will save loads of bucks

Anonymous, 25 Jul 2017No... It seems like a better version of XA1, not a X1. ... morewell the XA series has nice design so putting in a great chipset would make it more appealing.

i dont understand why the X series and x compat aren't more popular. I just recently got the Sony X for 250 dollars and i'd say thats an awesome deal considering the quality of the phone. Maybe i wouldn't buy it at msrp either but at 250 dollars its the best phone for that money.

It seems like a better version of XA1, not a X1.

X and X Compact are done. Number of devices sold were lower than XZ and X Performance.

Sony will not keep premium midranges..

Same happened to M5, price was similar to Z3. Or even Z3+ in some areas.

apple 100% "in house" smartphone... when is that? Maybe year 2250? Making screens and SoCs doesn't make smartphone in-house. Even Samsung and LG's are rarely 100% in-house (Exynos running S5,6 and with ISOCELL camera sensors were 100% in-house). Apple has enormous way to go from currently 0% in house to 100% and equally I don't really see them having technology, nor being able to efficiently achieve this. Currently they are like light years behind technology when compared to likes LG, Samsung, Huawei etc..

Anonymous, 25 Jul 2017" the benefit of OLED is better battery life " Only when... moreNot true, the saving comes from not having separate back light and accounts for ~35%+ when comparing like for like to LCD, furthermore OLED is technically capable of running additional 50% more efficient when you are right, it depends on how much black is in picture. LCD cannot disable single pixel whereas OLED can, that not only gives better contract and black, but as well can save significant amount of energy. As such OLED is 35%-85% more energy efficient than LCD. Minimum 35%, technically up-to 85%, but on normal use average panel is ~65% more energy efficient. Considering that up-to 70-80% of all energy used by modern smartphone is screen... this makes for significant difference.

Whoever is manufacturing and supplying Apple with it better make sure they know what they are getting themselves into and have some sort of backup. Just look at the companies that supply them with the sapphire glass and Imagination, once Apple turn their back on your, you are literally bankrupt.

also how is apple's OLED going to be "in house" when they are buying machines from other companies.

Apple trying to make its own in house stuff is scary. and im wondering when if ever sony will hit mainstream but im sure apple has enjoyed pushing sony out of the competition by not including them in carriers.

Check Phone Arena review o... morego and complain at phonearena then.. at gsmarena, the phone had very accurate and probably the effective model.. maybe they got a defective or pre-production unit.. i used to hav s7 edge.. i dont hav s8.. but on s7 edge, the colors were awesome... LG tv displays are nowhere close to what samsung did with S series.. 8 years of development.. put on a VR, you will know, how different a note 4 and a s7 is.. , maybe LG is doing great in TV business... but thats not a huge business by long stretch.. 90% of the masses doesn't replace their TVs in 2 years or so.. A TV lasts for 8-10 years.. but a smartphone, is replaced every year or two.. So what are you getting at?? Samsung J series and their amoled panels do very well and only one year sales is equal to LG tvs selling in total in five years.. if profit is what you are talking about... and if you are talking about overall asset.. samsung and Apple are in a total different league of their own.. no electronic brand is even close by a long shot... but the thing is samsung TVs also do very well in the market due to the brand recognition, and reliability, and one of the better services they provide onsite,
