Its really incredible to see how much the image quality for phones has increased. On a small screen many of these photos could be easily mistaken for having been taken on a legitimate DSLR. That being said on a larger screen these images degrade quickly. Despite having a 12 megapixel resolution, the camera is quite soft texture-wise. It appears as though samsung tried to remove any sort of noise in the photos, and then tried to compensate for the resulting lack of detail by oversharpening the image creating the dreaded oil painting effect and seriously degrading the quality of the image. Foliage is the worst effected, and leaves tend to look absolutely terrible at any screen size above 7 inches. Overall the texture is absolutely awful. I have to give love to the increase in dynamic range, especially in terms of highlight rendition. That being said, blacks need some work. Black/hard shadow areas tend to lack gradation and detail, while still showing a disproportionate amount of noise (although i like this light grainy-noise, as it is very reminiscent of mostly non offending film grain). There is also plenty of halo effects and heavy artifacts. If you look at the last photo of the woman holding the umbrella and zoom in on her eyes, you can see plenty of artifacts in the white of her eyes, not to mention that her eyes are actually noticeably gray. Sharpening/halo artifacts are evident around any solid lines. Hair texture, even at the low ISO of 40, is awful. Pieces of hair blend together and hair as a whole is very messy. The fake bokeh effect was very pleasing, although i often saw places where it wasnt so smooth and I saw plenty of times where it would randomly become less "blurred" out towards the center of the frame, which makes no sense in terms of how bokeh works. I would like to see decreased sharpening and decreased noise reduction, which should help with texture. Im still incredibly impressed by what this phone has to offer. This critique was basing this phone against my $500 DSLR's photos. The fact that i am able to see image quality anywhere near a DSLR from a phones camera is incredibly exciting. I cant wait to see some low light photos from this phone!

The live focus mode does not seem to work well. Much blurry hair.
The 52 mm camera with 1/3.6" sensor also seems quite noisy and the image processing does not do its best job.
And the wide angle camera still does not seem to be able to compete with a Google Nexus 5x/6p/Pixel with HDR+ ON.

I feel it's nowhere nearly as sharp as the Note 4 camera... which accidentally happens to have a lot more MPIXes.

Not happy at all... I feel this one's another Galaxy phone worth skipping. Also 2X telephoto... are you kidding me Samsung ? With a dedicated telephoto lens I think they could have gone straight up to 4x or even 6x from about 26mm how much it is, without changing the thickness of the phone or the camera isle.

I feel that avg consumer inputs are really spoiling the high-end phone engineering.

Not bad. This is the part where Samsung did well. Implementing Dual Cameras did not sacrifice the specs/performance of the main camera compared to previous generations. It is 1/2.5", f1.7, with OIS. Thought was also given to the second camera, though it is a small sensor (1/3.6") it is capable of ISO 25 (for cleaner, sharper photos) with OIS.

this is a definitely great device, but samsung's oversharpened photos really annoy me a lot.
it looks great on small screens but it looks terrible on tablet or pc, especially the way it renders trees and bushes, looks so fake.
and they do that to all of their devices, especially high end devices.

Devil GK, 23 Aug 2017Yeah I loved it.. This will destroy IPhone 8 and V30..nice joke. but wait for it

Maybe Samsung can improve that further with a firmware. Or maybe this was just a one-off bad instruction from the Note 8's front camera.

The Dynamic Range seems to have improved a little bit. Especially in low light situations.
I am very curious to see videos of video shooting to see how much of a difference it has made for video too.
