Anonymous, 01 Oct 2017OP5 is 500. It does not have ip68, slot sd, hdr screen , tr... moreFirst of all, we're comparing SONY a massive conglomerate to OnePlus, which is small fry.
Sony could afford to make the XZ1 and give them away for free... OnePlus cannot.
So to say that Sony cannot at least match OnePlus would be to insult and do a disservice to Sony's capabilities in design, mass produce-ability, and price-economy.
Don't forget, OnePlus is actually cheaper $479 (and sometimes cheaper)
It's now shipping with a high-quality in-ear sets.
Has the Rapid Charger and Cable in the box.
And a pretty loud mono speaker.
Sony's stereo speaker is abysmal. I was a big fan of the Z3c, but this is pathetic.
You have to try it in person, even my LG G6 is louder.
So you get no points there. They really cheaped out here.
Adding in Dual-Sim or microSD card doesn't actually cost much/if any money.
We're talking about inflating the Bill of Materials by under $2.
The 1080p LCD screen in the XZ1 doesn't cost much to produce.
This isn't OLED. Remember the expensive PS Vita?
I would prefer an OLED at the quality of the Note 8, but with a 1080p resolution, which would help performance and battery life. No need to handicap the device with a 19:9 aspect ratio and 3K high resolution. If I want VR, I would get a proper VR-Headmount instead.
SONY Apps?
Sure they cost some R&D money to produce, but after that they're practically Free.
The PS4 Remote Play is one example. Seriously, let's say all those Apps and R&D inflate the BOM by another $1. It's still small fry in the grand scheme of things.
The biggest "money loser" when it comes to OEMs and mobile phones are those which spend the enormous amount of initial funding to design, test, and produce the first batch of phones. Now, the idea is to actually create a product which will be bought over and over and over again by consumers... because when that happens, that's when you've fulfilled the initial expenses and now your sale price is at least two-fold of your BOM. Many OEMs like Sony, LG, HTC, Asus are designing and putting their devices on the market... where they need something like 1 Million units to sell. However the phones always have something missing or wrong with them and aren't marketed properly, that they don't sell well. Then the OEMs panic and try to decrease the price from $700 to $550 to sell them, and they make some money, then they reduce it further to $450 and the rest of the stock gets sold. But the whole thing leaves the OEMs breaking even. OEMs cannot compete with Apple using Apple's tactics, because they don't have their own Apple stores, mindshare, and marketing budget... let alone ecosystem. They cannot compete with Samsung who can sell a product using their vertical integration, and years-earnt mindshare and marketing budget.
What OEMs can do, is to adopt the Xiaomi and OnePlus method.
They can produce a fantastic device without the massive shortcomings of usual, and utilise the internet for marketing, and gain mindshare that way. They can sell the device at slim profits; example BOM ~US $200, Sale price ~US $500, Difference ~US $300... and over time that net difference would pay off their initial R&D and investment, and would transition quickly over to the profit stage. Google did this with the Motorola Moto G, they turned a decent profit. Whereas Lenovo failed with the Motorola Moto Z. Case in point with the OnePlus One, 3, 3t, and 5. And Xiaomi has done this for years (2012->2017) with their flagship Mi(1->6) and Mi Note (1->3) series, it's not only made them profitable, but also given them mindshare, expanded their company into other categories, and instilled confidence to investors.

Luxor, 02 Oct 2017Hot. Because we dont mind paying $700+ for a 5.2" 1080p pho... moreSony fans dont bash qhd...they just dont appreciate it and prefer fhd, or 4k implementation of fhd..as qhd has a seroius drawback in graphic performance of a phone, as seen by numerous live tests and benchmarks.
We just want best performance for our money...and we get it.
You can buy yourself a qhd device if you want, just dont bash fhd screens when your UI and games lag and stutter because ot convenience of having "QHD" written all over it.

Hot. Because we dont mind paying $700+ for a 5.2" 1080p phone. Then we will bash a $700 QHD 6" phone with 18:9 ratio as a gimmick and said it have smaller screen than it really is. We Sony fan are awesome. Bezel is best. Sony forever! Other phone is garbage.

Im a big Sony fan, but not. You see xz1 compact is the champion here, xz1 is nothing to write home about. Big bezels (bigger than z5), and everything else can be found on xz1 compact at a lower price.
