Super bias article in the conclusion sections, deciding for every user that the telephoto lens is the best for us. For me is Wide/Monochrome/Telephoto, as I am not a private detective and I don't need to zoom into photos to catch someone far away, nor do I want to make macro selfies with blurry background!

Wide angle is the most useful

I think this comment section should be free of comparation comments. Anyone should know that smartphone is just trying to give you the capability, not the (best) quality of each features it has. If you want the best quality game with awesome graphics then buy a console. But smartphones offer you the capability of gaming yet still, won't be as good as console games. It's also the same with cameras. You want a real zoom, full control of your images, you should buy a DSLR or a dedicated camera. But again, smartphones offer you the capability of a dedicated camera inside your phone. Also, the portability makes you have one less gadget to bring.

Don't dare to say 2x zoom is better than ultra-wide-angle! 😠

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2017Not if you have a good sensorBut the image would be better on that same sensor if it had less megapixels

What if someone used the iphone sensors on the back too? Those have 3d depth right? Wouldn't those make the perfect bokeh effect?

two camera won't be sufficient anymore. To satisfy the different needs now company needed to bring 3 camera one color high megapixel, one wide angle lens, one monochrome. Telephoto will not be required if this three functions as one. All camera must have layers of sensors like Sony showed to capture slow frame and better depth of field, color and more details.

Dual camera may be cool. But phone with dual camera is a bit ugly.

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2017I had a dSLR just before mobile phones became equipped with... moreYup.. Buying a phone simply because the camera is a very bad idea, considering the phone that pack all this usually cost the same and sometime over a decent dslr or mirrorless

My favorite are wide angle and monochrome then telephoto

smee, 02 Oct 2017and I want 2 back, 2 front cameras all wide angle capable o... moreThat would actually be neat.
The 2x camera's on the back should have the same lens and sensor, and spatially separated on the opposite corners of the phone.

That way they can be a decent ~8cm or so distant, about the distance of the human eyes, which would allow people to record in 3D, or VR, or AR-Applications. Such as judging distance of an object.

It would be neat if the front x2 cameras are the same as well... and if the front cameras are the same as the rear cameras. Now you could definitely take 360' videos, such as "A Day at the Zoo" and then live in the moment again many years later with a VR headset and see your kids when they were little.

I had a dSLR just before mobile phones became equipped with cameras. Even until now, I still find smartphone camera quality in low light horrrible if not outright horrendous. DXO mark doesn't help with their questionable ratings skewed heavily by the flagship phone sponsors (Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.). They seem to regularly rotate top notchers from one flagship brand to another. They should just have done the reviews like Dpreview does on its website -
side by side compare tool. Let the user decide. Also, smartphone generation don't seem to realize just how fake smartphone bokeh effects are because they've never seen what real ones taken with 85mm f/1.4 lenses look like. It doesn't help that Apple and Samsung are promoting their phones as having dSLR quality. What? Those phones can't even capture half decent indoor photos in artificial yellow light without looking like a watercolor painting or an analogue tv station with weak signal. My advice would be to buy whatever smartphone you want for whatever reason other than serious photography. Don't ever make the mistake of foregoing ownership of a separate dedicated camera (dSLR or a interchangeable lens mirrorless camera) just because Samsung, Apple, Google or Huawei, promises dSLR quality and that you don't need any other device for your photo neess. by buying instead only a smartphone for your photo needs. Not even the most expensive smartphones are worth the photo they capture even when compared to an entry level dSLR at 1/4 their price. Their small batteries will render them dead before you realize how horrid the low light photos are when you view them in your computer: Underexposed due to lack of decent xenon flash, fake looking due to fake bokeh, too small subjects due to limited zoom, and sawdust or watercolor appearance due to poor high ISO quality.

A very well written and interesting article. Rare to see articles so professionally written (and with no typos). Need more such articles and more encouragement to writers like these. Makes me want to come back to this website. Please keep posting such informative articles all more often.

I can understand wanting to take better photos as per Huawei/Leica arrangement. To take wide angle shots step back, to take close-up get closer or digitally zoom... Both systems produce aberrations of the scene being photographed. This is after all a phone camera not a professional $5000+ snapper so I want what I see at that moment in the best detail possible. Not some close or distant phoney perspective. So Leica has it right for me!

B&W and Bokeh and Image quality can done by software, Telescope and Wide angle can done by attach Zoom lens or wide angle lens accessories, Fisheye and miniature can done by software filters, but capture an image in a Zero time is only can done by one powerful camera sensor, example: when capture a jumping post, an unexpected smile, unpredictable fast moving motions.
