Samsung brings two new camera sensors: 12MP 1.28µm with Dual Pixel and 24MP 0.9µm

11 October 2017
This is the first sensor with sub-1µm pixels. It will use pixel binning in the dark.

So, Samsung will stop using Sony camera modules soon, which they have been depending on for their flagships...

Sony Fanboy Bitches, 11 Oct 20171" sensor on a smartphone would basically kill the purpose ... moreIt would however make for a very thick phone.

That's the reason why phone camera sensors are so small, and it's alluded to in the article: the 1.28 micron sensor being intended to "remove camera bumps" is because it will have about 80% of the area of a 1.4 micron sensor with the same number of pixels, making it possible to illuminate it (without excessive angles of incidence, which cause their own problems) using a shorter lens, giving a thinner camera module.

Smartphones lost their way they want to become camcorder wtf

Sony Fanboy Bitches, 11 Oct 20171/7" is practically smaller than 1/3" lol.LoL, sorry, i actually wanted to write 1/1.2" or 1/1.7" my bad

1" sensor on a smartphone would basically kill the purpose of point-and-shoot or any other proper compact digital cameras' purpose. A smartphone with a RX100 image quality would drag down the sales of point-and-shoot cams, and maybe even action cams (as smartphones nowadays are starting to be waterproof even w/o proper certification).

About 1/2" is what smartphone camera sensors could possibly get as large, which, to me, is quite enough, though of course as a tech addict, I'd love to get better.
1/2" with 16mp resolution should result to a pixel size of 1.4um, which is the same as that on the Samsung phones, but with this, you can get so much more details than the relatively low resolution 12mp, assuming that you've got as good OIS and as good f1.7 lens as the Samsung phones.

Joy-808, 11 Oct 2017i have also used my friends 808, it was ultimate. it wil... more1/7" is practically smaller than 1/3" lol.

Love the Community, 11 Oct 2017As per ReviewTechUSA, it's because of Tech Journalists and ... moreI know that, but then why don't they create a separate model than the main flagship that would fit these requirements?

If their "main" flagship follows the new trend (curved glass unibody, thin body, removed features ...) they should create a "Pro" model (thicker body, durable plastic body, removable battery, big 1" camera sensor with OIS, IR remote, ...) for advanced users. Even if they afraid of costs so they released an upgraded model of this "Pro" line only once per 5 years, I would still be satisfied with it. They would fill a gap and satisfy a demand in the market.

Joy-808, 11 Oct 2017sadly we are not going to see 41MP in android anytime soon,... moreIt's not necessarily about 41MP, but the sensor size. We need an Android phone with Nokia 808's sensor size (plus OIS and bright aperture).

Android supports dedicated hardware image processor. For example the Venus Engine in the Panasonic CM01.

AnonD-523433, 11 Oct 2017Joy, they should give us a 24mpx sensor, between 1" to 1/2"... morei have also used my friends 808, it was ultimate.

it will be awesome if someone makes a 24mp 1/2" or even 1/7" sensor. I am fine with with camera bump, provided there is a dedicated camera key & image quality is true to life

Joy-808, 11 Oct 2017sadly we are not going to see 41MP in android anytime soon,... moreJoy, they should give us a 24mpx sensor, between 1" to 1/2". My 808 pureview was easier to pocket/handle than my galaxy s4. I had absolutely no issues with the ownership of the 808

sadly we are not going to see 41MP in android anytime soon, as SD 835 supports 21MP max, and upcoming SD 845 supports 24MP max ... alas !

And android does not support the additional dedicated hardware image processor, used on the Nokia 808.

and we have seen what happens when nokia forced their 41MP to lumia 1020, it took 3 seconds for 1 full res pic.

let's see how it goes on android.

The Pixel size seems tiny. Though considering that Samsung is the market leader for Low light smartphone photo and video, I doubt they will make sensors that have low light and cross talk issues.

Maybe these sensors have super fast full res readout (45-60 @ full res), that makes up for smaller pixel size. Also that would help with a few other things. Also I won't be surprised if Samsung makes lenses even faster than f1.7 (f1.4?) To compensate for the smaller pixel size.

I am looking forward to the Samsung's high speed camera sensor. The one on Sony does high speed for like.27 seconds, at like 720p or something. And it takes a while to write all that info too. I hope Samsung deals with those issues.

more pixel size means more detail to capture per pixel, samsung is using smaller pixel sizes to reduce bumps, clearly indicating that these sensors are meant for mid rangers.

Nokia 808 pureview's 41MP sensor, have a pixel size of 1.4um at full resolution, and with pureview tech pixel size for 5MP is massive 4.01um, and for 8MP, pixel size is 3.17um, which allows much more detail to enter. and that big sensor created a huge bump xD.

Samsung is doing the reverse thing.
