HTC Desire will not be updated to Gingerbread

14 June, 2011
Bad news HTC Desire owners, HTC has just announced it won’t update the original Desire with Android 2.3 Gingerbread due to insufficient memory. You are now stuck with Froyo forever. Ok, this forever thing...

Disguisting. HTC made me sick with this typical Apple style PR bullsh#$$t. Desire is powerful enough to run Honeycomb flawlessly. They could at least honestly announce they are not plannig to update Desire. I think their success has corrupted them.
I owned HD2, Desire, Desire HD (huge overheating problem), and my next device certainly wont be HTC. Samsung and SE now appear to be much more trustworthy manufacturers, not to mention more and more inovative LG, and market suprise- Huawei with Ideos x5.

Well thanks HTC for dissapointing us. I still believe HTC Desire is a great phone, but guess what? Maybe my next phone will be an iPhone.
      Peace.

              Is it really that bad?

I'm sure the Desire (an extremely popular device) will have a sizeable developer community.

I have an HTC TyTN 2. I'm running Froyo on it off my microSD! Froyo on a Kaiser!

That's the real benefit in having a willing developer community.

XDA is great for this kind of stuff.

Just head over there and try some unofficial ROMS out.

My TyTN 2 is probably never going to run GB. But Froyo on the Kaiser is an amazing achievement in itself.

              Just my 2 cents!

this excuse is super vague. Why is the wildfire s doing over there with gingerbread under the hood and yet the desire can't get the update? And the specs of desire is no lousier than some of the current generation high end phones like the xperia play and arc.
If sense ui really takes up alot of memory, HTC should start from modifying the sense ui to a slightly less memory-hungry version than to compromise the gingerbread update. What consumers want is the improved overall performance that an updated firmware can bring than to keep with the customized sense ui But running on just froyo.
The original desire was once a very potential competitor/alternative of the galaxy s. So they should get the same number of updates, or else how can we trust HTC in pushing out future firmware updates to their current high-end smartphones?

What a difference 12 months makes. Sony are the fanboys haxxors faves while HTC go all Apple on everyones asses.

                      Wow!

                      Buggest bs ever, this is.
How ignorant do you have to be in order not to see that this phone is crying for gingerbread.
Not enough memory? Take a look at wildfire s.

                      Truly some large scale bs.

Shame on you HTC, shame on you big time.

Doesn't matter, though would loved to have gingerbread. I am pretty happy with froyo. Next thing I want from HTC would be a 7-8 mm thick smartphone beating the sh** out of galaxy S II. HTC haven't been able to bring down the thickness from like 11mm lately and that is a true disappointment.

Sony Ericsson FTW, X10 with mere 384 MB RAM gets Gingerbread.

i don't agree with this htc statement, either it's not official or they ignored their users, as of course the galaxy s , has less memory than desire, and it rungs on gingerbread,,,

I think this is just a marketing trick to make the desire users want to upgrade to HTC's newer models. Otherwise what can possibly make you switch to another phone?

P.S. Android 2.3.3, 2.3.4 + Sense 2.1 or Sense 2.1+3.0 run extremely well on the Desire! You just have to go poweruser style :)
