AnonD-624070, 05 Nov 2017But the change gives negligible improvements over something... moreApple has as many as 9 or 10 models for sale, depending where you live. If you are looking for an iPhone but don't like the X, get one of 5S, 6, 6S/P, SE, 7/P, 8/P instead. If you had no intention of buying an iPhone to begin with..?

        Ha Ha. Iphone cyclops :)
Nice read though. This is the kind of stuff real users need to tell us. Specs often tend to be misleading. Real user experience gives a better idea of what the phone is really like.

You want the iPhone because it embodies the future of the smartphone.

It's a future which everyone will get sucked into - including all Android handset makers including Google.

What iPhone X does (besides having an excellent display, speedy internals, and sublime craftsmanship) is make security transparent.

Want to unlock the phone? Just pick it up and give it your attention. Want to unlock your password vault? Just launch it. Want to run an ssh session? Just launch prompt. VNC? Launch screens.

Using a smartphone nowadays involves having a zillion secrets you don't want leaking out into the world, and so these secret keeping apps all have passcodes to contain those secrets.

Using biometric authentication keeps the sting out of unlocking your phone, but once you're in you suffer a thousand other cuts from these secret-keeping apps and their secondary authentication. You either enter a passcode, or you can use Touch ID and dutifully reapply your thumb (or finger) to the Touch ID button.

          Until now.

Now, you have a system which continuously and passively can authenticate you without you doing *anything* but continue to use your device.

Once you've told iPhone X it can use Face ID to authenticate 1password, it will always "just open" for you. If someone else uses your phone, that big gate is back in place keeping them out, just like you remember.

You can slide right into prompt or screens as if we lived in a world where security wasn't important; that Walgreens app or Reveal app are just a launch away.

It's like it was the 80s again, except we still have our new toys :-).

It's why Android handset makers will try to duplicate Face ID, and will do so with varying levels of success. They'll be forced to use it, or be stuck with the sting of a thousand thumbprints :-).

              In my country, for the price of iphone X you can get;
              i7 + GTX1060 gaming laptop

Even better specs if you spend that money for gaming PC instead.

i would buy it for the sheer CPU performance. But who wants that. The snapdragon 835 has a faster GPU. And i play mainly games. So the oneplus 5 was the obvious choice. Cheap, sleek and blazing fast.

If HTC U Ultra is a "waste of space", then the iPhone X is a "waste of money" because you can pretty much buy a good laptop at that price, or 2 good Android phones and an Android tablet combined, and with enough money for dinner at a nice restaurant.

So you have to swipe to unlock it do you, Nice, i just have to look at mine and it unlocks.
why dont you spend loads on upgrading the front camera to do something simple and charge people over the odds to to cover it. I will always have a better phone than an iphone and i will always get it cheaper.

No matter what people say about iphone x, still most of it's parts are from samsung part. Its like a rebadged of samsung by using apple name and apple boring design. People said the screen is better than others, but the screen is samsung's. Chip are theirs.
Well different people different opinion and different interest on smartphone brand.
If apple iphone the best, still cant become best selling smartphone in the world. Samsung by far the best selling smartphone.
Btw its too early too comment anything about whats good and bad of iphone x, let just wait few months time, or after a year. Sure there will be alot users put on personal review.

There are many people who for one reason or another often use facial makeup ... I think it will often fail with the makeup changes that people often use. Not sure how the learn system could manage the infinite variations of the facial makeup. Not sure if that system is designed allow unlock only with your 3D pattern ignoring your facial colours, including the infrared pattern which will make the system less secure. I do not think it's recommended for those people. We'll see if tests are done about it.

Regarding the design, a rounded form with continuous bezel and something pasted up in the form of an uni-eyebrow or whatever you want call that thing.

What's most possible is that it will be so-so. For most it will work right away but be as you say (a bit slow), but eventually the self-learning algorithm would regognize you from a mile, simply when looking at your phone, even from an angle...

At least that's the idea. The kinect like understanding of space is extremely powerful, there is nothing that the sensor will miss ... it's all software from there on. If they do not fail in software (and Apple typically doesn't), it would be the best unlocking mechanism ever. Far better than fingerprint... you'd merely need to look at your phone from one point onwards...

You gotta admit that notch is terrible no matter how you look at it. Also face id is too cumbersome to use, it takes 2-3 sec before you get to see main screen even though it work. Oh don't come up with excuses it is what it is.

Anonymous, 31 Oct 2017Honor Magic from Jan 2017 was the first phone with 3d facia... moreMuch much more primitive version of it.

iPhone was not the first touch phone either, but it was the first useful one.

Innovation is making a new feature useful. Adding it and then users forgetting it even exists ... it's a waste of money. Samsung is known to waste money in such features.

Apple's depth ID will be industry standard. Huawei's was an awkward first attempt. That makes a huge difference.

One thing that Apple indeed copied is fast charging. It is already a standard and Apple comes late in the party (see the difference?)

But Face unlocking existed in various version and *nobody* was using it. It was awkward, it often needed external light source etc...
