Samsung Galaxy S9 mass production could start in December

08 November 2017
This will give factories two months to pump out units for the alleged February launch.

The iPhone 7 wasn't built to hold a 3.5 mm port. You pretend like they just filled the volume with a big piece of plastic, but that's such a bare-faced lie it's absurd.

Furthermore, you claim a problem was he had to use "off the shelf" retail parts instead of a "custom designed headphone jack". But do you realize the size differences? He shaved his 3.5 mm port down to the metal, where he couldn't get it any smaller. Compare the sizes of a Samsung waterproofed 3.5 mm port and the port he went with:

    His port: https://i.imgur.com/F64DGFX.png
    Samsung's: https://i.imgur.com/rRqDJKu.png

Samsung's waterproofed port is 2-3 times the size. Are you saying Samsung couldn't get a custom designed port either?

You were caught in a bare-faced lie. Just own up to it and stay away from lying in the future.

and I still find it humorous that you insist on calling that piece of useless plastic a barometric sensor. The only way that would indicate barometric anomalies is if the phone hit the ground at terminal velocity.

He had to (1) drill into the back panel to thin it out, (2) move the battery so that it was against the logic board (Samsung Note 7 flashbacks, anyone?), (3) angle the haptic engine, so that it too was against the battery, (4) trim down the 3.5 mm port to a shell (this would have made waterproofing impossible) and (5) compromise the display (pressure could destroy his panel, as you could see from him losing several panels trying to close the phone). I believe he also broke his Lightning port in order to scavenge its audio output.

So no, it wasn't a simple matter, nor is it fit for mass-production if you don't want zero waterproofing, broken panels and exploding batteries.

Samsung are... moreSamsung crippled their competitors development of OLED technology by buying up all the Canon-Tokki CVD's, and are currently the only display manufacturer that can produce OLED displays that can compete in the market. That became painfully obvious when Google tried to fit LG OLED's to the Pixel 2 XL's years before they were ready. This is also why Samsung can demand 2-3 times the price for their OLED compared to equal LCD's; there's no competition.

Samsung have a de facto monopoly on OLED production.

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2017The problem with that is.... none of that is happening. Fir... moreAnd the people who use the 3.5 mm port are still free to buy devices that has the port. Most people just don't care about it. Bluetooth is outselling wired alternatives, and most people just use whatever comes in the box anyway.

The iPhone 7 got an IP67-rating and a +245 mAh larger battery in the exact same body as the iPhone 6S when they removed the 3.5 mm port.

And not only are "Samsung's $100 earbuds" NOT necessarily superior to $160+ wireless options; they're not free. They're included in the price you pay for the phones. Samsung can do this because they don't have to pay exorbitant fees for OLED displays (which they force all other manufacturers to do due to their monopoly). They also own the Harman brand that produces them. It's literally a minimal cost to them, and their overhead is huge.

You're also not forced to use wireless alternatives as you can just as well use wired options directly as USB-C or via external 3.5 mm DAC's if you so please.

And if you haven't realised it yet, smartphone prices keep rising due to more and more expensive components having to be included. If you're fine with paying over $1000 for a phone, go ahead. But most people aren't, and prefer manufacturers keep cost down in functions they don't care about.

Waterproofing and sleekness are higher prioritised among consumers than a 3.5 mm port. So the 3.5 mm port is cut.

Another thing you apparently haven't realised yet is that USB-C and Bluetooth are both open standards. Unlike Apple, Android smartphone manufacturers don't make a penny from the 3.5 mm ports removal. Competition is fierce in the Android space. If a manufacturer can't offer better specifications or cheaper prices, they don't sell. Simple as that.

And they are not making them thinner, giving more features or internals, newer designs, and the water proofing with it are just fine.
And the free $100 pair of wired buds Samsung ships with all s8 and note 8 misses is far superior to smut $160+ pair of wireless ones you are being pushed to shell out the extra cash for.

And that right there is the sole reasoning. Cutting costs and pushing you to pay another $160+ on their wireless ones. Not because it's better. Not because millions of people are not using it anymore. Not because it's thinner. Not because the phone is any cheaper as a result...which in fact after cutting more out they cost even more.
Just to get more money our of people.

And people are sitting here blindly being like oh yes please take things away and charge us more with absolutely no benefit at all to us. Its the future.
