I have an LG G6, so i'm a 18.9 convert. Plus with it's wide angle dual cameras, my photos and videos look stunning. Reduced bezels and a width of approx 72mm-74mm is my sweet spot. Anything more than this and I get hand cramps from holding a phone

16:9 anyday - Much more wider , in portrait mode & enough wider in Landscape mode , can easily write in portrait mode. Better for viewing photos & movies.
18:9 aspect - Just a gimmick to save cost , Bad for watching movies as its way wider , so you don't get depth of scene , apart from black bars left & right , less value for money as you write on a 5 inch portrait screen when the actual screen size is 5.8 inches ( IPhone X ) , so you compromise on portrait width.
The Best is 16:9 , no front buttons , but gestures ( aka Iphone X ) , Face Id , & slim bezels ( Full screen 16:9 ) 6 inch screen instead of 18:9 - 6 inch.

16:9 is the best on phone, more than that should all adopt mini projector.

It's more complicated than just aspect ratio, I would give a higher priority to total package size, the size that I feel most comfortable while using is the Lumia 730, so fit a screen as bezeless as possilble in that body, and 16:9 or 18:9 doesn't really matter, as long as the grip is sure, and their is enough room for battery

I personally prefer 18:9 as long as top and bottom bezels are thin (the way LG did with their g6. It allows perfect square for two apps side by side you know.

For me...16:9AR all the way with minimal bezels. Huawei has shown how it is done on the regular Mate 10.
But i will reluctantly go for the 18:9AR HTC U11+ bcuz of the big battery. I also wish the LG V30 had a huge battery even though it also comes in the narrow elonggated aspect ratio.

too wide and it looks like cinema old school wide top and bottom where you see nothing !!

16:9 no side bezels, small(ish) top/bottom bezels to hold on to when needed. I had a g6 for a couple months and hated the wide aspect. Notifications and quick settings were just out of reach...

a 6.0 inch 18:9 ~ 5.5 inch 16:9
a 5.7 inch 18:9 ~ 5.2 inch 16:9
a 5.3 inch 18:9 ~ 4.8 inch 16:9
So no, the Samsung isn't pulling anything magical. Its giving you a phone that's roughly the same size, with a screen that's roughly the same size. They are only deceiving you with the "5.8 inch" figure because they are using a warped aspect ratio.
You don't need to believe me, as you can prove what I'm saying is true by yourself at home: just get a square that is 10cm x 10cm size and measure its diagonal size which is ~14.14cm.
Now get the same square and fold it in half. So now the aspect ratio changed from a 18:18 to a 18:9 aspect ratio... its a rectangle, not a square. We have effectively halved the screen area, and you would think the diagonal size is now something like 7.08cm long, right? Wrong! if you measure the diagonal size of your 10cm x 5cm rectangle, it is now 11.18cm.
It has only decreased less than 3cm... even though we have effectively chopped it in half !
That is deceiving, and it has worked to fool the masses.
And to make matters worse, the bezels have not been shaven off. The display, which is really thin by the way, has simply been placed over the top and bottom bezels. Now, they prance about preaching to people how they have bumped up the StB ratio from ~65% to ~80%... however, the phone's physical size hasn't changed. In fact, when you watch a video, most videos (even the one's you recorded !!) are in 16:9 aspect ratio, so you now get letterboxing... hence the bezels are effectively still there!
This is best evident when comparing the LG Nexus 5X to the LG G6. The Nexus 5X has a slightly larger screen, and has a slightly smaller phone dimensions. Conversely, the LG G6 has a slightly smaller screen, and has a slightly larger phone dimensions. So I ask, where is the progress made?!?! Its even worse when you realise that "trend" or "marketing buzz" actually cost the phone having a second speaker, and front-firing at that. It would have been much more impressive if LG kept the 16:9 aspect ratio, kept the dual-front speakers, slightly increased the display size, and slightly decreased the phone dimensions. That would be progress. But that is not what we got, we bought into the lie.

For the sake of marketing propaganda, they say 18:9 phone is wider
I know it means on landscape mode, but
In physical sense all we can see is taller and thin phone, not wide at all
And if you say the wider the better, make remote control shaped phone!
It will become ULTRA wide phone by marketing terms... LOL!

I won't trade it for U11Plus because it's too tall, with bezels amount still there.
HTC should made U11+ on 5.8" screen, because they can't make compact 18:9 phone like LG does with V30.
I don't mind 6" screen with 18:9 ratio like LG V30 dimension
So there goes my vote, I don't care about screen ratio as long it has thin bezel...
Having said that's because we don't have much a choice with 16:9 bezelless phone, only Huawei 10 that I'm aware of... and it's GREAT!
Still have room for FPS in the front.
That should be suitable until OEM can implemented biometric on screen FPS.
I hate back FPS, especialy weird placement beside camera ;)

But when I have a hands-on, it is actually much smaller or almost the same size as my 5.2" 16:9 XPERIA XZ

My desktop PC is ultrawide (21:9) so I have no issues with a phone also being ultrawide.
Telly does seem to be adapting to wider aspect ratios, too. Both the new Star Trek and Stranger Things were shot with the wider 18.5:9 ratio.
We also have a new annoying trend on mobile pages where we get a forced overlay on the top and bottom with ad links to "related" content. A wider (taller) screen cures us from that plague.
