People's perspective is all different... As i can see from the polls.. And comments.. I have come to view the longers screens as just extensions where the capcitive buttons were present, actually something i used to think why sony never did when using my z1, and for the movie consumer the 16:9 ratio will give more black ares.. I don't know if the crowd here is too young.. But when the widescreen tv came, the regular tv show were either stretched or had to be letterboxed as they were 3:2 ratio for old crt tvs.. Wider screens have been in the market for games and content creation for some time

There's a limit on how much you can stretch viewing and nnot make it look ugly. 16:9 is enough.

18:9 is better for smartphones, but it currently has very limited use.
For one, when consuming a 16:9 content, the unused part of the screen gets wasted.
Manufacturers should make use of that space, just so it doesn't feel wasted.
Maybe a "utility area" when it's not use, ala-LG V10/V20 or HTC U Ultra secondary screen.
18:9 will soon be a norm for smartphones, but until then, I still prefer 16:9 until the unutilized space from 18:9 will be used effectively and efficiently.

18:9 will also not be the future they were tall phones many years ago and they died quickly no one remembers them now
16:9 is standard for almost everything
if someone want small bezels sure but keep it 16:9

I'd prefer a wider screen not longer screen. Like i prefer 8" book-like tablet over 7" widescreen tablet.
Problem being wide phone are hard to hold which may be one of the reason smartphone makers didn't make those.

18:9 is just plain horrible and has no advantages whatsoever.
It's horrible for web browsing, since it's much narrower, so you have much more word wrapping, making texts harder to read.
It's also horrible for videos, since almost all videos are in 16:9 format, so you'll have awful black bars on either side.
18:9 is nothing but an abomination that was invented by mentally handicapped engineers on a bad drug trip.

I think Huawei mate 10 has the best aspect ratio 16:9. I do prefer note 8 more, but when you want to watch YouTube video in full screen on note 8 looks fake with stretch option.

16:9 + Thin Bezels = Actual Improvement
18:9 + Thin Bezels = standard 16:9 phone size, no improvement in screen size for games/videos
Thin Bezels? Yes, thin but not too thin.
We want healthy, not anorexic. Something like ~80% StB is perfect.
Now add front stereo loudspeakers, and make the phone symmetrical like the Alcatel Idol 3.

All it does is drains battery for 99,99 percent pf people .
I understand there needs to be a phone for that one guy that wants to use VR on their phone and there should be 1-2 QHD phones out there but not every phone like we see nowadays .
I guess what I'm trying to say is not every new thing is automatically better that what we were already happy with .

Phones are getting wider because people are getting fatter and lazier on their phones all day going all obese that's why they request larger 18.9 ratio 6+ inch display.

The only solution it is! auto screen aspects when released: hybrid screen size! When you wanna 16:9 just take out left/right sides and when you wanna 18:9 only do pressure those sides

18:9 is the future. Just like QHD was the future and large screens were the future. Actually, they're all more like the now. And unsurprisingly, there are those hesitant to change. But they will eventually. They always do.
