Counterclockwise: the fingerprint reader goes back, front, back and side to side

How rear-mounted fingerprint readers overtook the front-mounted ones.

It either should be on the front or side, that should be the only position/s for it. Some sheep somehow managed to put it on the rear end and since then the stupid trend continues, rear is the most impractical and inconvenient location ever for a fingerprint reader.

Anonymous, 26 Nov 2017Iris and face scanners are way behind fingerprints when it ... moreYou obviously don't have a phone that has an iris scanner. I have the note8, and it's just as fast as the fingerprint scanner. It's not faster, granted, but it's not "far behind".

And i dont care about speed. With my current setup, i pick the phone up from my pocket, my thumb is already on the home button that you can tap even while the screen is turned off. This wakes up the screen while the iris scanner immediately searches for my irises. Then just like that, my phone is unlocked. And i haven't even held my phone properly yet. That's convenience I've yet to experience with fingerprint scanners.

I've always preferred fingerprint sensor mounted on the front, because of ease of use. As with back or side mounted fingerprint, you need not to lift your phone to unlock with fingerprint sensor if it's on the front. With manufacturers pushing for tall bezeless 18:9 screen ratio on phones, the fingerprint sensor is being relocated to either the back or side. Rear mounted fingerprint isn't half bad, but if it's not carefully mounted for easier reachability (looking at you S8 & S8 Plus), then it kinda sucks. With bezeless 18:9 screen ratio on phones, it makes sense to mount the fingerprint sensor either on the side or under the display. The only issue with side mounted fingerprint sensor is that, if it's on the left you can't comfortably use your right hand fingers and vice versa. Under the display fingerprint sensor is the future in my opinion because of convenience of usage with the only downside of making touchscreen/display repairs more costlier than they already are.

More manufacturer should start mounting the scanner on the sides just like Sony does, as it enables minimalistic design and higher STB ratio without making the phone look unattractive as is the case with most phones with back mounted scanner.
On the other hand front mounted scanner makes the bottom bezel bigger and it breaks the symmetry of the phone. Also that space could be used for front firing speakers.

2 - When the screen breaks, how will you use it? And if ever it breaks, you'll have to replace the sensor as well instead of just the screen. That, then adds cost to the repair.

3 - Nobody asked for very thin phones. iPhones are so thin, but there seems to be nobody to complain about the Note 8 being a thick device. Super thin smartphones are dead, just as how curved TVs started to rise and stopped, then fall down until extinct.

Side is the most suitable placement for fingerprint... I tried my friend's Sony phone.. And I left surprised..

Side fingerprint scanner is the best placement imo. The back one is fine too but it looks ugly there.

Fingerprint sensor under the display where we could scan our fingers on the screen is the future of fingerprint scanner.
