OnePlus explains why it opted against having Project Treble on current devices

The company says implementing Project Treble on current devices through an OTA update comes with risk of bricking the units.

DoubleAgent, 07 Dec 2017OnePlus device is an open device which means you can root i... moreit's not that simple. you'll need to repartition your /system and /data so that you have a specific /vendor partition. then, you'll need to make sure the system calls the driver correctly. lastly, if your kernel was pre-4.4, you'll need to upstream your kernel and basically create a new kernel tree by yourself.

    Its too risky but how was it implemented in pixel l, ph1 and mate9 without issues

          Why were the Pixel 1 & Essential phones able to do it?

            Lies, Mi A1 comes with android N and it has partition. Everyone knows oneplus do not have a foolproof method to make their spywares work properly with google pushing security updates every month.

              Smart decision to not partition the OnePlus 3t.
              However, OnePlus knew about the partition requirements for Project Treble and Android Oreo before they released the OnePlus 5.

              So they were negligent in their development of it. Okay, I will concede that perhaps they had advanced too far, to go back and implement it.

              However, there's no excuse for the OnePlus 5t.
              It's basically a lie. They were lazy, and don't care about consumers as much as people say.
              As commented by others, OnePlus will be more than happy to sell you a OnePlus 6 next year to make up for it.

                I believe the reason is more to reduce the software development costs. Since the 5 and 5T was released with pretty much the same hardware and the only difference being the screen and the second camera they wanted to unify the devices and release pretty much the same software update for both devices. And the reason why 5T doesn't have this /vendor partition is because the 5 also doesn't have it. The reason why 5 is still with Nougat is because OP didn't want to release the 5T with Oreo, because they should have included the vendor partition and thus making both software different.

                  Just make backup app that will store all user data, do full format of memory and create partition. Install new system. The End. It should take less than 40min if user have lots of data on phone. If its just few GB it would take maybe 20min

                    On the other hand, Apple convert everyone partition (iphone, ipad and macbook) to AFPS without much issue.

                      Ok, so giving them the benefit of the doubt up to and including the One+5, for the 5T they just didn't want to invest the resources, but will happily sell you a One+6. Yep, sounds about right.

                        A lame excuse, which doesn't justify why they launched a brand new device, the 5T with Nougat in the first place. Several months after Oreo was released. They released 5T with N because they were too lazy to bring Project Treble to the device, which is required by Google for releasing a new device with Android O.

                          Not believable. Either they are lazy or business motive.

                            OnePlus device is an open device which means you can root it all you want. People who owns OnePlus largely understand about Android and/or is actively developing/modifying their ROM. Can't they provide steps/reference so people can do it themselves? (making their device have project treble)

                              That is a valid point, unlike the one they gave for jelly effect.

                                In fact - op5&5t released when Oreo already were actual. Why they didn't prepared these partitions? Becsuse all money gone to marketing, forum bots and paid reviews.

But those who are using premium flagships they will change mobile once in 2 year. And those who are owning midrange phones will not change once in 2 year. No manufacturers will give 3 year OS upgrade to midrange..

                                        Understandable.Hopefully all 2018 phones get project treble and all flagships get 3 major software updates and midrangers get atleast 2.
