Sunday debate: Saturated vs accurate screens

14 January 2018
In this installment of our Sunday debate we discuss color accurate screens vs saturated ones.

Sort by:

Every smartphone should have option of accurate and punchy colors
If I'm watching pictures or a movie etc I would want punchy colors
When I'm editing I would want accurate colors

I don’t care to be honest , I turn my screen to minimum brightness all the time so screen tech is wasted on me, if I can see a text and call I’m ok with anything that’s clear enough to read, I liked my Samsung s7 and my iPhone 7 screens about the same

What about "depends on what I'm doing" ? For text, I want vivid. For films and pics, realistic-sih

Definately accuracy, i want to see the material how it was shot, filmed, designed etc. Those people decide how the material looks.

With OLED especially red colour hurt my eyes, it looks horrible

First OLED which i like is iPhone X, it combined best of both worlds wíthout losing accuracy.

I prefer accuracy because it gives you more depth and shades. If you boost your colors on an accurate display with software (which is the way manufacturers boost their color saturation), you just loose detail on the muted colors, while still getting the same detail on the amplified colors. That‘s why we need good calibration on the displays, and this should already be there out of the box.

In the name of detail, I also like high contrast ratios. The higher the better. And this can be achieved by dark blacks and bright whites. The early OLEDs weren‘t really an advancement in that aspect. Their completely dark blacks make for a calculated endless contrast ratio, but in real life, their blacks were better and the whites worse, because those screens didn‘t get bright, especially if you watch a scene, for example an ad, where almost the whole screen is white because the more white, the dimmer the whites get on the OLED.
The newer OLEDs are better, because they get brighter, and don‘t use a pentile matrix which makes it sharper and more color accurate without calibration.

But for the real, almost perfect technology, we still have to wait a few years. The technology I mean is microLED, because this combines the advantages of both LCD and OLED. Dark blacks AND bright whites. And that is something to look forward to.

Its not just only about the colors, look at the HDR and details, the exposure and contrast balance, the amold is so overrated.

                  > The only exception to the rule that an accurate screen must be dull are Apple’s LCDs. They’re accurate but not lifeless.

I'm sorry but that's pure BS, akin to the audiophile jargon. Screens are not magic, they either conform to the certain color space or they don't. Everything about screens are numbers, hard numbers and none of the "dull" or "lifeless" buzzwords, whatever that may mean. If manufacturer A and manufacturer B have accurate color screens for example in sRGB color space then they will look exactly the same, otherwise one of them is not accurate despite any buzzwords about "lifeless" screens.

I love AMOLED Displays.. Except for the fact that they can suffer from burn-ins.. Although I've never dealt with burn-in issues on phones that have AMOLED displays such as the Nokia N8 which I used for over 2 years, running every day with over 3 Hours of SOT. Currently got two Samsung Phones, both with AMOLED display. My usage is pretty rough with over 5-6 hours of SOT everyday. I have never cared about colour accuracy because vibrant colours look more cool to my eyes.. Not too vibrant but balanced. Since phones don't pack as big screen sizes as desktop monitors and I don't do serious photo or video editing, I think puncy colours makes for a pleasant viewing experience. Thankfully, most OEM provide an option to customize screen mode with different colour profiles. It's all about user preferences. Some like accurate colours and others like me prefer saturated colours. IPS displays aren't bad either but in my experience of handling a bunch of phones with IPS displays, I've found that they look washed out when viewed under sunlight. The contrast and low levels of blacks IPS technology offers can't be on the same level as AMOLED Displays. Well, both technologies has its own merits & demerits, for example, the Synaptics supplied under display fingerprint sensor which Vivo implemented for the first time ever, currently only works with AMOLED Displays.. What I would love to see in 2018 is, 120 Hz Refresh Rate to become a standard. That would be nice but I have no idea if AMOLEDs can pull of a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

Could'nt the person at least use a Z5. Bcos a Z5P dispaly will actually be too buffed up for that line up. Let's just walk around XZP and dnt feel guilty about it, shall we?

Why do some ppl like oversaturated colors and pure black if this does exist in real life?

My x compacts screen, with a bit of white balance adjustment is fairly accurate, not saturated and not dull. A colour accurate and high quality screen isn't dull, and in my opinion is the best.

A while ago I watched on youtube a video that did comparison of XA1 Ultra, U11, G6 and S8.
Person play same video on all them.

I believe it was nature videos.. Mountains and much snow.
Sometimes the S8 showed the white of snow a bit red.
                            XA1U a bit blue.

                            G6 and U11 were better.

I have no idea which mode was set on s8, but the white kinda red bothers me.
                            Yellowish white too.

It just really depends on the user themselves whether they are a creator or a consumer. Creator will most likely just find it neccessary to have a color-accurate screens - as for myself, I just find it completely frustrating to produce work on my laptop and then find out how completely different and, most of the times, worse it looks on other devices.
But for the consumer, the one who watches videos, browses social medias which are heavy on photos, it would just be a lot pleasant to look at them being at least a bit more saturated.
Overall, just giving the option for the person to decide whether they would like either of the color profiles would just be the ultimate solution. There isn't much to talk about this topic as it is obvious enough - most of the devices, even the older ones give the option to go either way.
