Samsung Galaxy S9+ will allegedly use a 1/2.55" IMX345 sensor

05 February 2018
This sensor will sit behind a variable aperture and should be able to record video at 480fps.

However, shutter speed can be increased to deal with bright lights. Another approach is to use ISO 50, for even better quality, while keeping the small sensor intact. These will not be so complicated.
There's one more (quite unexpected) way too...
Take Nokia 808 Pureview for example, its' maximum shutter speed was only 1/500th of a second & sometimes even its 1/500 with ISO 50 was too bright, so to deal with bright lights, they added a ND filter... with Auto ND option. (so it engaged whenever highlights were blown out).

In my opinion, S9 should easily do 1/2000th of a second with ease. So, why variable aperture. that too, like you said, just upto f/2.4 or so?
I'm trying to imagine the efforts Samsung must've made to implement it, and I'm wondering why not have removable lens (with 3 or 4 proprietory choices), Xenon+LED flash, etc. in its place?

Of course, I'm observing too, because its not launched yet. Let's see how they manage to make sense of this decision.

a high quality tele lens (50mm, or even 75mm) with large aperture (at least f/1.8) would be much more useful than crazy 480fps with very low IQ. 120fps is already good enough for 99.999% users, the IQ is most important, find that balance.

AnonD-4254, 06 Feb 2018As much as its awesome having variable aperture, I still ca... moreIt will also let you stop down in bright sunlight. I actually wish the variable aperture stopped down further to f22 instead of just f2.X. That would really make a variable aperture worth it in my mind.

The lack of variable aperture was the last piece of technology in a smartphone that separated it from a DSLR/DSLM. (Besides obvious sensor size) Now you can get lens attachments, some really good like what Moment offers in addition to the dual lens setups on most modern phones, apps that give you full manual control and even RAW and log profiles, and now a variable mechanical aperture too.

I expect to see more DSLR-like smartphone images as we move forward into the future. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this trajectory, I'm just in observation mode. The biggest strength of a smartphone camera is it's always with you. Mobility is a bigger factor than a lot of ppl in the business want to concede.

As much as its awesome having variable aperture, I still can't understand its need on a phone..

f/1.5 is great, but the f/2.4 at the best will give only one confirmed benefit- it will reduce Background blur for those pics where you need more depth... or maybe slightly increased sharpness or detail.
Otherwise, f/2.4 will only reduce the light reaching the camera.

                What else?
So, Why did Samsung take pains to implement it, instead of something useful like xenon flash or so?

Nooooooo. I hope this is not true. They are touting "camera reimagined". How can they put same size sensor and muddy the waters with high speed recording? I'd struggle to find much people actually using it more than once, if at all.

I was really hoping for a sensor size bump..
