Getting a new phone is exciting but costly, how often do you do it?

It ranges. Usually I am swapping every year or so. unless I hear the newer model is not good/doesn't have what I need/heating up issues/other bad stuffies. if I hear about a faulty. I skip a year. if not. every year.

    Meanwhile here still using my lovely iPhone 5s for about 3years++ and i dont see any reason to change it soon, it’s fulfill all i need

          At the beginning of smartphones a lot!
          Now I'm finally find my pace... for now I'm using a Moto g5+, and I'm not going to changed to soon! This phone is amazing for the is price! For example, is faster than the iPhone 8+ in opening everyday app: WhatsApp, phone, maps, music player, browser...

            I used 8 phones since 2006 until today. Currently using Nokia 6 and Nokia 5730. Looking for a symbian Nokia smartphone to replace the 5730 as it is brought for collection as my main purpose

                Rarely. And not because i love them, on the contrary. There are no decent phones so no point in spending money on replacing one crap with another.

I live in Africa too and I've been addicted to switching phones - high end phones. Don't even start me on clones. There were times I would do more than in a year. Complaints from my wife and other factors is helping me change. Last year I used 3 - HTC 10, iPhone 7, Pixel XL, which I am still using. I envy those saying they're able to hold on to one phone for years. I am already itching to change from the Pixel XL (had since Black Friday). Maybe I'd buy the iPhone X and then stop visiting tech forums, because I see it as part of the problem.

                    I still have mine. Powered up last week, it still syncs flawlessly to my hotmail account and exchange server. Then tried to log into skydrive, didn't work. Then opened maps... 2014 data. It's sad, really. The software seems long forgotten but its hardware still runs strong enough to last a decade or longer, it seems. Thanks Nokia.

Its getting pretty useless regarding apps, cant even browse properly nowadays and rss feeds are broken, but you cant beat it as a multimedia device.
                      I just use my pc for other things. I refuse to exchange it for a lesser device in photography!

                        Just curious, is there anyone here who keeps a mid-to-low end device (or even a low-end device) as daily driver for at least 2 years, or even 3 or more? Many folks here (from the comments section) have at least upper midrange or flagship devices. Currently I'm using Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo from 2015 (launched in 2014).

                        I change phone when it's too frustrating to live with, and now my phone is frustrating. I miss the old days when phones were sufficient for so many years. I have had a Java phone which lasted for 10 years before it was accidentally swimming in my raincoat's pocket for 30 minutes in a heavy rain, and of course it died. Before that happened, it was still working perfectly. I also still have a Nokia 3315 which is still working. It was my dad's daily driver from 2000s to 2015.

                            I'll be keeping my Note 8 for at least the next 5 years unless something a whole lot more useful is made available. Would still be using my 2014 OnePlus One as my daily driver today if it weren't for the Note 8 being a whole lot more useful, especially with the added S-Pen, MicroSD card sloth, and water resistance...

                              Currently using

                              1. Main phone:
                              Nokia 808 - Only will change when something manage to beat it in photography
                              Currently the battery is still going strong even after 5 years(2 days battery life).. Using it mainly for phone photography and messages and gaming on the go (using emulators emipsx, emisnes, gpsp and ppsspp)

                              2. Android needs:
                              Lenovo A916 - Only change when it is not usable anymore
                              Currently the screen is cracked.. I never used a case because I just love the feel and grip of the soft faux leather back.. Battery has been replaced 2 times(once just recently).. Performance still tip-top buttery no-lag even with ancient 8-core a7 coupled with mali 450mp4 (MTK6592) and stuck at 4.4 kitkat.. I am still able to play mobile legend at hiighest quality and battleground smoothly.. All other social apps works perfectly.. Nothing more I could ask for..

                                    This weekly poll's title picture really is Gold. I really missed those times where you can have a phone in literally every shape, size and form you could imagine. Heck, even the buttons did scream creativity.

                                    Those things aside, I change my phone if it breaks or lag beyond imagination. But my current phone from 2013 still covers my needs: emails, music, YouTube, eBooks, even some light HTML editing on the move. :D

                                      I must confess I used to play childish before - buying new flagship every six months. Now however, I guess I have become more wiser to not to be fool again pouring my hard earned money into those greedy companies pockets.

                                      Currently I own Galaxy S4, Lumia 1520, Nexus 6P & iPhone 6s and do not plan to upgrade until they are dead OR out of software updates (including customs). Wish to squeeze each drop of usage out of each of them now. Enough with wasting my money every few months already! I mean comeon! Have you used your phone to it’s maximum potential / used each beautiful app that it already supported that you never knew, before you even jumped ship and replaced?

                                        Usually I replace my phone it's either:
                                        1. After 2 or 3 years;
                                        2. When my phone becomes too laggy or slow and reset/restore doesn't fix it;
                                        3. When it malfunctions or has hardware problems after warranty has expired (warranty is only 1 year in our country), and the cost of the repair (parts + labor) is more than the market value of the phone at the time.
                                        4. When the phone is repaired once, and has problems again. Usually the first repair is the start of new or more problems. Once a gadget is opened for repairs, more problems and issues start to appear.

                                        Whichever comes first.
