Samsung's 2015 flagships may get Oreo update

10 February 2018
T-Mobile's official website says Samsung has agreed to support Oreo for the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and Note5.

Samsung is going to give out a third major update to the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ and the Note 5 that was released back in 2015 (from three years ago!), and yet, people still complain. Smh.

Ha, Samsung also need to provide security updates for their phones, just 2016 for example. Can we sue them if security becomes a problem for those owners whose phone security updates have been abandoned by Samsung.

Dragos22, 10 Feb 2018I hope that the other models will receive as little as 3 ma... moreIt's not discrimination by any mean, 3 major update for flagship phone is no(supposedly) since people are paying premium, midrange in the other end is cheaper and 2 major update is pretty good given what you pay, to put in context, the pixel cost a lot than other flagship while providing barebone feature, even the pixel2 XL is not that bezelless, yup they got their camera but that's not enough, so came the 3 year promised support,
Unless the midranger is popular so the company may consider to give more update because the profit pay the extra development cost

I hope that the other models will receive as little as 3 major updates, but if they do not get it means you are making major discriminations between end and mid range with the flagship and that's not fair! I have purchased this mid-range phone (A5 2017) and I am very pleased but if you have the possibility to make 3 major upgrades but do not distribute them for all series (A, J, C, S, Notes, etc.), that means you are making great discrimination, and I understand that for some models you can not because of memory but if you could solve this thing with S6 Edge and Note5 that means you can with the other series!

Kyo, 10 Feb 2018Other brands have always been sluggish with updates except ... moreIt doesn't mean everything. Samsung has their propietary SoC which makes them work even faster with updates. The reason that the S6 family and Note 5 are going to receive Oreo update is that the SoCs inside of them are all Exynos all over the world. No Qualcomm stuff inside, so all models and versions of these devices will get the same treatment from Samsung if disregard carrier and region cr*ps that prevents an update from happening.
Meanwhile, they can't do the same promise of 3 years updates for the later S7 family & Note 7/FE and S8 family & Note 8, for a fact that US models won't get the same thing with SnapDragon variant. Unless Samsung is inconsiderate to release the 3rd software update for Exynos versions and leave it away for SnapDragon models.

AnonD-715926, 10 Feb 2018The USP of Xiaomi's midrange Mi A1 is Vanilla Android which... moreDo I smell you as someone who can't understand an easy thing? I did praise Samsung's effort for this, but I also just explained why is it.

I don't care about how many features are there on the software. I'm just focusing on software update support alone. Most of Samsung phone users don't even use 1/2 of the features packed on Samsung Experience UI. And stock Android is there to experience iOS on Android, and basically use Android the way it is supposed to be.
Now let's go to the case of how fast do they release updates, and I'm pretty sure it's something that Samsung isn't known to be good at.
For example, LG's V30 already has received Oreo, and as we all know, most of LG's software features are inspired from Samsung's own one, so LG's software is just as heavy as Samsung's software, yet being able to release the nearly same exact software a month earlier just means how little effort Samsung puts into their software.
The only reason I am looking for OS upgrades is for future proofing because some apps and features don't work on older versions of Android.

If Samsung does update the s6 then it's game over for Sony, htc and lg because these are currently only alive at the top end and being at the same price as Samsung and having inferior software support.
Motorola is just surviving because of the Moto g and that will also change after they decided to reduce the software support.

Ofcourse it got upgraded. And please do also mention just how bare bones is Vanilla Android compared to one from Samsung. A Pixel 2 might very well lack some basic feature that has been availabe to a Galaxy S6. And also don't forget the number of issues that Mi A1 has had with and without Oreo. Same for Pixels. And going by this article, didn't Samsung just do something that Google promised over their Vanilla devices; upgrade for 2 years? Appreciate something for once.

Yeah that would be really Awesome if S6 will get OREO Update ..
                          I still love my S6 ..

Just Wow! Hopefully all other OEM'S follow Samsung's strategy on OS updates. If the rumors are correct S6 might still be updated to Oreo. LG, HUAWEI, HTC, etc look-up, if you want to beat Samsung dominance on Android market, why not follow their strategy.

Samsung takes ages to update their phone. I'm glad they're at least thinking about old devices. It's the least they could do lol.

The truth is: it WILL get oreo update. We all now that... but HOW MANY features comparing with s7 and s8??? 20% of the s8? 40% of the s8? Let's be honest guys, even the s9 will have way better refreshed UI with more things than oreo update on s8... because this is the policy on samsung... This is it. Pay for the latest phone if you want the entire software package. Doesn't matter if you paid 1000 euros 6 months ago. Good thing for people like me who don't give a damn importance about any of those updates. The factory OS has always been the best for me. No exceptions. And yes the s6 family I loved the most and I respect samsung for making this effort. A flagship phone should get 3 major updates.
