Apple is not a manufacturer ! They just own iPhone trademark and sell it, but all parts are made by LG (retina), samsung, and assembled by Foxconn. Only iOS is their own idea...

[deleted post]"With iOS you are guaranteed support for 2 years minimum & the apps work across the board."

          That's NOT true!

1/ The new features in those releases are NOT compatible with all iphones! So you cannot count old iphones as "supported" in the same context as Android phones.

2/ Software Releases rarely address issues, they only add new on top of the existing ones. Except if you count jailbreak messing a feature of course.

3/ Software updates for iOS make old iphones laggy! Period. Android is the other way around, when applicable.

4/ I don't want to mention the frequent 100Mb updates of iTunes, that break Outlook sync more often, than Microsoft issues patches for Windows.

5/ software updates for iOS cannot be reverted. Easily & officially at least, still a nightmare. Even for Apps. If smth is broken by the update - bad luck, you'd have to sit&wait for mercy.

Offtopic: Iphone lags and FCs apps. Constantly. Users are just more tolerant to that, as they cannot compare (99% never used another smartphone).

[deleted post]Yes, Iphones are barely sold. You work in a phone company that also bundles iphones as a contract to FORCE the sales. Anyone who is not an apple fanboy and looks at the bigger picture can tell you that even Nokia outsells apple on both sim free AND contract phones. UK is not the center of the universe, its even an insignificant place to tally phone sales.

The main problem with Apple is that their products are great in every aspect (which is relatively easy to achieve). So, you can't complain about everything and you have no choice than to want Apple products.

This is strategy that was never practiced before Apple. The question why other manufacturers don't use this practice and instead they always, like in some kind of deal - copy Apple's "breakthrough" innovations - is what Apple Conspiracy is all about.

AnonD-14563, 05 Aug 2011Yes, yes, 18 months it's very limited support time. My advi... moreLook... I'm in here stating my opinion based on experience JUST LIKE everybody else.

18 months is lousy support when you consider that the iPhone 3gs will support iOS 5 and many Android devices that are sold are already outdated running yesterday's version of the OS.

Windows success is based on the same ideas as Androids... they have an open philosophy and are trying to get there OS on as many devices as possible. Windows worked the same way. Not because it was better but due to its availability on being on so many computers at once. Apple's closed system resulted in a lower market share (obviously). But lower market share doesn't equal less quality. In terms of PC operating systems OS X is miles ahead of Windows, and Lion just pushed that even further. So the argument that since it has a larger market share doesn't always equal quality or dominant choice. Its was readily available to consumers.

Same with android... its widely available so it becomes a choice for many. Compare that with iOS and the iPhone. Its the most requested SINGLE PHONE at most US retailers. And consider that the iPhone 4 is now "old" technology, but still sells exceptionally well. This should tell you something. Most techies on this site (and others) simply don't understand why this is. So they come up with lame reasons like "apple cool-aid" or "blind" or "it has a shiny logo". When in reality its because the average consumer finds the iPhone/iOS experience to be very seamless. Same with the iPad. No Android or other device has even been able to hold a candle to Apple's success in this category.

The reason I posted isn't because I'm some iPhone fanboy. I'm not. I have a Nokia and love their products (laugh if you want). But I am an Apple enthusiast and have been for the last several years. I have had tremendously great success using their products and I can attest to how great they are - durable, trouble free, reliable, etc. And even though my experience with Android is limited, its no more limited than most of the Fandroids that comment in here that have very little or no experience with iOS or Symbian or any other OS they love to make fun of. My experience was on a phone that supposedly was a great Android phone, yet I had all sorts of problems with the phone lagging under very little stress, apps force closing for no reason, widgets disappearing at random, phone taking forever to reboot, etc etc. The only thing that was great on the phone was the call quality and the video camera. But I now have the N8 and the camera is superb and call quality is great. Along with the fact that the phone doesn't give me headaches like the Android did.

So yea. That is why I posted what I did.

iPhone is designed to be idiot-proof: anyone could use it with ease without preliminary knowledge of operating systems and using UI with hardware. Everything is intuitive as it gets, and eye-candy to make things desirable (this is what they call UI-experience). And consequently, it's very limited (out of the box).

So, I wonder: how come idiot-proof phone could be smartphone?

In a couple of years will be like this: you want a featurephone, you buy an iphone, you want a miniPC, you'll buy an androphone.

Let me ask you something. Windows is the most fragmented OS out there, but is the most successful yet. Why do you think is that?

Luke, 05 Aug 2011No, you can't. The things, you've just mentioned, are norma... moreClearly you've not even tried using iOS long enough except Android to know what you're talking about. What it lacks on customizations, iOS is one of the most simplest smartphone OS when compared to any other mobile OSes. Its why Apple has managed to stay on top and if this keeps up, they will always be on top. K.I.S.S concept.

It takes lesser presses and swipes on iOS than Android. For example, just a swipe to the left and you can delete a message or email, it's not as easy as this in Android. Safari is one of the most fastest mobile browsers today with more webpages designed and tailored to fit Safari on iPhones than in any other smartphones out there. And not to mention the Nitro JavaScript engine, even a dual-core Android would lose out to a year-old iPhone 4 in terms of webpage loading times.

iOS 3 to 4 brought over 100+ new features and now, iOS 4 to 5 has over 200+ more with all being noticeable throughout the entire OS. So what do you mean by "usually just copy some app functionality"? Software updates have always been consistent and it's just a plug and play affair. Even loopholes are fixed promptly as soon as they're discovered (jailbreakme, gone in less than a month) One version release for all iDevices (excluding Verizon) rather that Android's fragmented mess. With iOS 5 being OTA, you can be guaranteed this will be a strong competitor-to-iOS selling point.

It's all about the user with iOS, not so much with Android or other mobile OSes.

I dont get this, how is apple the largest smartphone manufacturer, does that claim relate to the total sales of smartphones that are active in the world, which would be nokia. not going off a single quater's results. plus when nokia start bringing their windows 7 devices and the n9 meego on sale, they will surely get this back. all nokia sales in the recent quater are symbian 3 devices and still it sold nearly 20 million!
