Counterclockwise: the story of Galaxy S phones, part 2

18 March 2018
Revolution doesn't happen every year. In fact, in the house of Galaxy S, revolution happens once every two years.

None of these since the S2 do anything that would make me want them in the least - some of the things like the various dropped features or curved edge / 18:9 screens are even huge drawbacks for me. Frankly, at this rate, I don't see my next phone being a Samsung - or even there being a "next phone" any time soon. There's simply no compelling reason to "upgrade" - it would be more like just "grade" anyway...

Kangal, 19 Mar 2018The S7 most definitely WAS a revolutionary change. It mana... moreSays it's a revolutionary change then proceeds to say things are slightly improved. First of all half of what you said is not true. Speaker is worse, it the same hardware but now has to blow through an extra waterproof layer, try talking with a piece of tissue in front of your mouth. Have you actually compared them in real life? S7 uses screen panel as the S6. Body strength is the same, how can S7 be stronger when they use the same type of construction and materials. Of course the price was the same, cost goes down and improvements are made, what do you think happens in a year of r&d.

S6 wasn't behind competition, it was easily the best camera of the year. Also S6 is much sharper than S7, S7 is only better in low light and auto focus. S7's dynamic range is garbage, and video sucks. It surely does not still have the best camera out there. If S6 is midrange and S7 would be mid range too. S8 has camera improvements, it not the same camera as S7.

Micro SD is not an improvement, it's just bringing back a feature that shouldn't have been removed in the first place, same goes for waterproofing. How many features does the S7 have over S5? S5 has more features actually.

The same fast charging is also on the S6, not an improvement.

Of course it should have better performance, it 1 YEAR NEWER.

It wasn't revolutionary at all, just refinement.

Their components, endurance, materials, etc are differences you can't see

Don't even dream your cheap price will get you the very best.

Imperator Neubaticus, 19 Mar 2018Maybe do something like this for the note line too.Good idea actually.

Anonymous, 19 Mar 2018"The S7 generation WAS a revolutionary improvement over the... moreThe S7 most definitely WAS a revolutionary change.
It managed to keep two features from the S6: 3.5mm aux port and Stylish aspect.
...and it improved the Screen to Body ratio slightly, and the speakers slightly, and the screen quality slightly, and the Selfie Cam slightly, and the Body Strength slightly, and the asking price WAS SAME.

On top of that it had some several major improvements.
First of all, the waterproofing. It's one of the best out there, and it did it without covering the flaps, using a special case, making the device much much thicker... or anything negative.

Secondly, the rear-camera wasn't slightly behind the competition like the S6 it was in-fact much much ahead. In fact, the S8 performs practically equal to it, and the Pixel was slightly better than the S7. The Pixel2 is much much better than the S7, though. So today, the S7 still has one of the best cameras out there, but the S6 is barely midrange.

Thirdly, the microSD making a comeback is also a major improvement. Especially if you have a 32GB model for just the OS and Apps, and use the microSD to take photos, videos, and store your music.

Forthly, it still managed to get an decent boost to battery life. A combination of better internals and more battery capacity did the trick. Not to mention the fast charging.

Fifth, it STILL got a boost in performance. The QSD 820 was slightly faster than the Exynos 7420 but the new Exynos 8890 was actually quite decently faster.

....it was Samsung being competitive, it was a Revolutionary Device back in Early 2017 and still holds up today as an okay flagship, or probably the best midrange device.

Maybe do something like this for the note line too.

For me no such port limits myself (i own an iPhone 8 from work, which I sometimes use when I want to reserve battery on my S9, or a non 3.5mm jack phone called the Samsung GT-S8300 Ultra Touch. I say no to the removal of 3.5mm jack because I am experiencing the frustration of having a low battery and still wanting to listen to music, and you can't hotswitch to other devices.
(I own also an iPod Touch 6G, gift from my fiancee~ (yes. I AM engaged now) I use it for enjoying apple music and listening to music when the S8300 is low battery.)

"The S7 generation WAS a revolutionary improvement over the S6 and people DIDN'T noticed."

                  There corrected.
How come the addition of microSD AND waterproofing considered a small improvement?

I did had the slightlest thought of getting the mi6 when I looked for a new phone when the Huawei P9 I had did some problems. I had a tough time to decide between the S8 and Mi 6. but once I've realised the Mi 6 didn't have 3.5mm jack nor a MicroSD card. (which both I need.) I dropped the Mi 6 and opted for the S8.
Frankly though. I did hear rumors about the pro 7 of Meizu and nearly got that as well. as I really liked it's concept. of having a back screen I could manipulate as a developer. I knew I had to sacrifice the SD card so I prepared mentally. but the mediatek stuff dropped me from getting it. (I still want that device. Just with qualcomm or exynos chipset.)
summing stuff up Cap'n, I agree with you. there are so many alternatives I could get. but hey, you can't change the past, can you? ;D

This is something that even a Samsung doesnt have.
                                  And cost much less money.
Just for your information new S9 cost 320 dollars to make rougly 270 eur and the selling price is over 950 euros. S9 plus is even more pricey but to make one Samsung wont pay more than 343,25 dollars.

And now try to guess how much Samsung would like to pay to a TV Star for promo of their new devices.
