Huawei P20 Pro to have a 40MP sensor, plus 5x "hybrid zoom"

I'm very intrigued by how Huawei says this will all work, but I'll only be convinced when I see actual test results. I'm thinking the 8MP camera is locked at 3x optical zoom, and somehow the 40MP plus the 8MP 3x optical zoom will make 5x with no quality loss? On paper, this is amazing to me, but sounds wholly inefficient if I were a professional photographer. Personally, I think having multiple cameras to make one image would hinder the maximum capturing area of each sensor. While I like dual cameras in general, my favorite being the monochrome sensor for increased color reproduction, the greatest cameras only need one sensor.

Notch or no Notch, 3.5mm headphone port or not, that's not a problem for me. Can't wait to see how the cameras will perform in real life. All I need in a phone is a superb camera, FHD+ screen at most, good battery life (2 or 3 days), at least 4 Gb of RAM and 64 Gb Internal Storage + micro sd card slot.

Mate 11 with newer chipset will be a better option as by then we may have a clearer idea about this tricamera set up. But then something new may come and the wait for perfect smartphone will prolong.

AdeeshaJayanath, 20 Mar 2018I have no idea about how they pack 40 Mpix sensor in to sle... moreIt probably has very tiny pixels, like 0.8 micron or smaller.
It might be 1/2.6" or smaller

Yeah, but it's Chinese. Chinese government spyware included in all Chinese phones.

I have no idea about how they pack 40 Mpix sensor in to sleek body less than 8mm. I suspect that 40 Mpix may be the sum of three cameras.

What's the use of a 40MP camera if a 5 month old flagship SOC like the 970 is now weak in today's standards?

The specification of 8 megapixels for the tele means that the 80mm camera won't capture more details than a very sharp 65mm 12 megapixel camera. Possibly 12 megapixels don't make much sense due to diffraction. Apple's and Samsung's tele cameras might suffer from noticeable diffraction as well.

Huawei... if your camera is so good... why you mix with a cpu that can not compete with the sd 845?
ok then you claim that you have the best camera resolution and even could be the best in quality but... you ask for the mix 900 euro... where samsung sell (in America) the best cpu and one camera that is in the olympus podium of cameras....
Why I need to buy a not so compensate pack?
That will be good only for the professional photographers market niche that will print in A1 forma....but the rest of mortals prefer a best compensated mix (I think, at least is my case)
Although a good battery, charge speed and selfie camera is a POINT! ;)

Triple camera? More like triple deal breaker. First of all who wants a 6.1 inch display, make it 5.7 inch bezelless. The notch is just pure eyesore, I prefer small top to bottom bezel. And lastly nobody likes EMUI software, it's ugly and needs customised android like Oxygen OS to support the OLED screen from burn in.

I don't believe this. A 40 megapixel sensor is not possible with a small sensor as currently the smallest possible pixel pitch is 0.9 micrometer as far as I know. The sensor needs to be at least a 1/2" sensor, otherwise it's not possible to get 40 megapixels with a 0.9 micrometer pixel pitch. Furthermore an f/1.6 lens for a 1/2" sensor would be even more unrealistic. This would be equivalent to a f/1.4 lens on a 1/2.55" sensor.
It's possible, yes, but it sounds a bit too good.

Wow! Now all those chinese copy-assemble bunch will start to pile cameras, next will come a 2+2+2, then a 2+3+3, next double notches, central notch, whatever ridiculous humongous aberration they can think of

The notch was enough to kill it. No headphone jack and price tag are additions to the wound. This phone will represent the "idiots in society" in my opinion.
