LG may be developing microLED screens for smartphones, trademark filings reveal

22 March 2018
So far Samsung has outed a microLED TV, and Apple has been rumored to want microLED panels for its smartwatches.

If they can do it with reasonable quality then perhap they can become relevant again. Oh and fix their terrible smartphone battery life.

It's about time for the mediocre OLED to die. Great news.

The basic technology of micro LED was around for long time in laboratory. But all failed to mass-produce it at reasonable cost. The micro LED "Wall" (146 inchs) of this MWC '18 from Samsung is good advance for very large screen like movie theater or professional use. But it is far from technology to mass produce normal TV sized (60-70 inch) screen at consumer price, let alone mobile device screen size like 10 inch or below. It will take at least 5 years to see any consumer grade micro LED TV at very high price, for main stream TV and mobile device, 10 years at least.

Of course, because the demo units are relentlessly displaying the same content, that's the cause of burn-in, ghosting or image retention on Organic LED screen. But in reality on a normal OLED phone user this issue is rarely happens.
That's why Samsung won't use OLED on their TV anymore (because TV and phone is different) instead they'll be ready to market microLED to consumers in August.

The issue is LG could not make mobile screens as good as their big screens.
All phones that usevSamsung screen have 0 nits in black colors which leads to unmeasurable contrast.
Contrast of V30 is measurable, black is not zero nits.

If I am LG, I will get trademarks on names like MLED, MILED, Ultra LED, ULED, Super LED, SLED, UQLED, QULED and other names to prevent Samsung from doing name trick like QLED, which is actually a variation of old LCD tech, not proper LED. LG is real leader in TV sized display technology. Two thumbs up for LG!
