in my opinion phone should be as small as possible and screen as large as possible. in my hand is very uncomfortable to use phone larger than 140x70mm (currently have this size 5 inch phone), even this size is bit too large for my hand. If to cut size from bezels and keep 5inch screen the phone should get around 120x60...65 mm. This would be quite good size and compromise for my hand, pockets and eyes.
second, the battery life. let phone be 1 or 2 mm thicker and have better battery. no need extremely high resolution, as you probably do not see pixels anyway. dont go with resolution too high and keep better battery life instead! however, have good camera, because you probably look photos also from other screens also.

small phone should have good camera also, even new nokia 3310 buttonphone with tiny screen should have better camera. if you take photo then the photo is not looked only from this tiny screen, but you look it from tablet, desktop, or share it. and if i have small hands and dont have fat fingers then i probably see much more from 4.5 inch screen than someone with fat fingers from 6 inch screen. it's not that powerful chip is wasted because i have smaller hands and my trousers pockets (and but) are just half of someone else size.

"A powerful chipset is wasted on a tiny phone"
You big head is also wasted because it is empty.

To go with Yordan I would also like some anthropological data to be created about the size of hands of people around the world which is the sole factor that decides what size of a phone a person would use. I guess the people with small to medium sized hands would out number the ones with large hands. This only is a simple pointer as to the question of debate that compact phones are more than an option for larger numbee of people of the world, they are an absolute necessity. However, within the smaller frames, everyone likes to have as bigger displays as possible.

I went for compact flagships, because we have the right of not having to get our pockets enlarged. I've typed on 3,5" screens and THAT was a pain. I'm using a 5" now, and it's fine. I believe that this is the perfect size, maybe a little bigger (5.2" would be peachy).

I think a high-end chipset in a small phone is just fine. You'll get the battery efficiency, and it'll be speedy through to the end of its life. I own a Xperia XZ1 Compact. I'm not glued to my phone all the time, and the battery life get's me through a whole day with plenty of juice to get me through the night, into the morning, and back from class.

I'm planning on keeping this Sony small-ship in my pocket for a couple years at least. Sony seems to be the one for Android small-ship phones. I cannot wait to see what comes out next.

                Bigger isn't always best.

Human do come in all different shapes and sizes and for some a large screen isn't doable at all.
So why not have variety..... all phones these days resemble each other. They have the same screen ratio, ram, storage, etc but the only difference is the brand name.

I would personally like a compact flag ship and I think apple for keepi g the SE line is a smart tactic.

I'm no apple fanboi as I use a note 8 and love it.

4.7" screen from Samsung galxy alpha is better than any phone till now. Yes in future I am looking for 4.7"screen with FullHd display with big powerful chipset. Anything bigger I have tablets laptops televisions excetra. One more thing bezel less is mandatory.

There will always be a niche market for small phones, just as there are niche markets for tiny [anything else]. It's just not a relevant market as the display is what a smartphone is all about. The bigger the better. Obviously within reason. :)

Compact phones can be used with one hand. I own a Xperia X Compact, I can play anything perfectly on it, some games, like MMORPGs, doesnt even need your hand to be on the screen all the time, since everyone of then have "auto" modes... Photos appears crisp on the screen, I dont need an 4K 5,5' screen to watch a 360p video from facebook or whatsapp, since those medias make the format smaller to consume less data... If I want to watch a full HD or higher resolution videos or netflix, I have my TV. How the hell are you supose to see the difference of a 4K in comparisson to a 1080p resolution screen in a phone? This is ridiculous unless you use your phone with a microscope in order to perceive the pixel density difference. Today people are getting more frivolous of what they want in a smartphone, 90% os people that buy a Galaxy S8 will not use the full potential of the phone, they just want a "beautiful" phone that make great photos, nothing more...

of course yes, that's why I have two phones, 1. For my main daily driver, iPhone 6. I love its size even tho its really slow now.
                        2. Xperia XZ Premium for multimedia only such as play games or watching videos.

Anonymous, 26 Mar 2018Technology may evolve rapidly, but our physical hands don't... moreI've used an iPhone SE last year; it was definitely harder for me try type than my own phone's 5.9" screen. I don't even have really big hands, but based on that test alone - small phones aren't made for me, so I won't buy one. But my sister's boyfriend (the SE's owner) couldn't use my 5.9" to type text without issues. It was way too big for him to handle.

Levy, 26 Mar 2018Agreed; that statement is far from being universal. I moved... moreExactly.
The large devices are a fine thing for people that got more severe vision issues than can be helped with a pair of glasses.

For the vast majority of people, what matters when it comes to vision is the RATIO of the width of the pixels and the viewing distance. When in a reasonable working distance where we can focus. For MOST people this ratio limit is about 1/12000. It does NOT mean that we NEED this ratio but that finer details would not not visible. I made a simple eye-test, and wrote more on it here years ago:

Technology may evolve rapidly, but our physical hands don't. One of the reasons why iPhone SE was so popular when it launched. Compact flagships are only dominated by Apple and Sony, a whole market demographic to capitalise on that other OEMs don't seem to realise...

The problem is not big or small, but that companies do not listen to customers. There should be more choice in terms of size (from 4 inches to 6.5 inches), removable battery (or IP68, depending on the preferences), esthetics (the notch is the emblem of thr lack of ideas of last 5 years). Devices look more and more just the same. Inevitably chinese manufacturers will sell more and more for unbeatable prices and many big companies from more developed welfares (with a few exceptions) will be forced to get out of this market because it won't be profitable for them anymore.
