Just be happy the man is still alive and still part of the company. Michael Jackson couldn't even make it passed 50. A CEO who is 56-years old is stepping down. This was imminent when he was absent from keynotes and he isn't GOD like some make him to be. A man approaching his 60's and has pancreatic cancer should NOT be stressed out and should NOT make others stressed out by running the most valuable company in the world. Running a company like Apple with such high, unrealistic expectations from people is not easy. I remember when Michael Jordan used to say getting to the top was hard. But staying there and maintaining that excellence was even harder. Sometimes complacency creeps in and there is a target on your back. More pressure to perform well if you are the king alone in the mountain-top.

There is a time to just slow down and pull back. Look at world history. Every great emperor dies and every empire does fall. Ask Darth Sidious. Nobody stays on top FOREVER AND EVER. Steve worked his ass off trying to make Apple what it is today and if that meant being an ass, so be it. Whether people hate his personality or not, he spent many sleepless nights thinking of the next projects and feeling that pressure of always performing to be the best. He deserves his rest whether in this life or in death.

I don't understand why people are so sad by this news. It is not like he is dead. He is worth billions and admired by many people. Anything or anyone who is popular will have as many haters too. The guy can spend time around in a pool and swim in money like Scrooge McDuck. He isn't as brilliant like TESLA or EDISON. He wasn't even the technical brains when he co-founded Apple. That was Wozniak whom Jobs cheated for money. Jobs doesn't have the greatest CEO execution. That's goes to someone like Genghis Khan. Much harder to convince guys to kill someone else for land than convince them to play Angry Birds or check their Facebook all day. More cut-throat business when Khan was CEO. Jobs is just a great and charismatic pitchman.

I understand younger posters getting emo because they probably became Apple fans after the success from the iPod/iPhone and Jobs is the only Apple CEO they've ever known, but Apple was still functioning before Steve Jobs returned. There was life in Apple before 1997 or 2001 or 2007. In fact, the Newton was a big gamechanger even if it didn't sell well and this was when Steve was already fired from Apple and started NEXT. Without the Newton, we wouldn't have the Palm Pilot. Then we saw a convergence of PDA functions put into later smartphones from the early 2000's.

Anonymous, 25 Aug 2011They opened up before and licenced Mac OS to other vendors ... moreWell true, but in the end the apple path in the mobile world up to now wasn't that different from nokia, they where leaders and suddenly all about them feels old, and in the end I think they will be stuck in something like nokia is... The open I was talking about wasn't open source but open mind, fight with their strength without the need of dirty games to win, today I was reading about the patent wars and I tough how funny it was that they copy the slide to unlock from neonode but they registered a patent over it. Anyway, has I said before, I hope they have enough strength to keep innovating, because that kind of wars will start to play against them eventually, and yeah, I also believe that windows is again the biggest rival in the arena

Anonymous, 25 Aug 2011android = many manufacture , iphone = one manufacture , Sym... moreBy that thinking, then Microsoft Windows was NOTHING too since it was backed by several manufacturers.

When you compare sales, it comes down to OS sales vs OS sales. Do you see reports of Apple's Macs selling better than HP or Dell? No. All you hear is how Windows dominates like 90% of desktop computers. Don't you see it? iOS vs Android is like Mac vs Windows all over again.

Anonymous, 25 Aug 2011Very funny, sales of Samsung Android phone is not even clos... moreDo your research mate, Android is the worlds most popular operating system. They have more activated handsets than apple could ever match. I never once mentioned samsung specifically, You seem to think that samsung is the only big facilitator of android. You are definitely under the same brain-washed spell of other apple product users, you have fallen victim to their advertising campaigns. I feel sorry for you.

Android is the superior operating system in terms of performance, functionality and style, with more free apps (and soon more apps altgother) than iOS. I look forward to the day very soon when apple kicks the bucket and accepts their fate of losing their #1 spot in the market. They should now do this gracefully with jobs being out of the picture instead of throwing around lawsuits targeted at BETTER products like spoilt little brats.

This whole situation could have been avoided if apple had've investedm more time in making QUALITY products instead of acting like children.

You know your company's attention is focused in the wrong direction when you pay your lawyers more to sue better companys than you pay your developers to make half-decent phones.

It was his vision and leadership that led apple to the position it is at today. Its sad seeing him go. This leader was needed to organise the immensely talented team of technicians that he put together, and to put their talents to good use. I hope it doesn't turn out to be downhill for apple from now on.

Roll on Android you are ... moreCheer all you want, Steve Jobs is only one man among thousands that innovate at Apple. Don't think for a second that Steve ran around the entire Apple campus doing everything while everyone else just sat there staring into space. They all have degrees and are fully capable of possessing vision and push the envelope of innovation.

[deleted post]OMG do you seriously think so many people use Apple products because we were hypnotized by Steve Jobs???? Steve Jobs is a great leader and visionary, but there are thousands of great minds working at Apple that also helped to bring them back from the dead in the late 90s. Maybe if you understood more of what Apple is all about you'd know that. But you apparently are just an iHater so you feel you need to insult anything Apple the moment it comes up. Pathetic!

smoochie, 25 Aug 2011Actually I agree totally with you, very nice comment, I don... moreThey opened up before and licenced Mac OS to other vendors Android style, and nearly went bankrupt.

Also, as much as people wish for Apple to go open, even more wish that they don't, ad continue their current approach which is already being proven correct. Google themselves took yet one more step towards the closed wall approach with the Motorola merger. Microsoft, with so much experience, and the opportunity to observe both iOS and Android, decided in the closed wall approach.

Android is a great platform but already is showing signs of strain. Mcafee already placed Android as the top platform for malware. If anything, one hopes that Google takes more steps to close wall Android for a more secure OS.

If Apple ever goes bankrupt, my prediction is that people will choose WP7 over Android. As it is, the signs are there that Android is more likely to go the way of Palm rather than Apple, if they don't change their strategy.
