Phones are different from cars. Apples (so to speak) to oranges comparison.

Phones are not devices that drive you from one place to another, they're handheld personal devices were people should be allowed to choose who to repair them especially so when warranty is no longer applicable. Apple's greedy practices and $cumbag practices should not be tolerated. People should be given the right to choose (at their own risk and understanding) who shall repair their devices and independent companies should be allowed to do such repairs. They should not be forced or constrained to stick with Apple and their overpriced repairs which others can do for much less. Apple should definitely be called out for locking down their devices, hardware and software-wise, and preventing people from doing their own repairs or through another repair service.

Don't forget Apple already did such $cumbag practices in the past with Error 53 (bricking phones with replaced non-Apple provided TouchID button when clearly the biometric data is stored in SoC and the TouchID button), intentional phone throttling when their mediocre battery ages, plus TouchIC disease (a problem with the logic board) for many iPhone 6+ owners where the screen gets problems such non-responsive to touch input which usually happens just after the phone no longer has warranty.

However, what Apple is doing by ripping off iPhone users with overpriced repairs when you can get non-Apple supplied displays and repairs for much less.

If you repaired your car, would you be OK with the wheel nuts or airbag being from some unknown Chinese copycat brand without you knowing about it? Would you trust it to operate as well as the OEM parts? You probably wouldn't.

Would you blame your car manufacturer if something happened as a result of that repair? You probably would.

Apple doesn't want bad press and negative reviews because some repair shops cheaps out and uses bad replacement parts for Apple products. Apple keeps a closed supply-line and high standards of testing for a reason.

We've all seen how the media jumps all over the slightest flaw in an Apple product, and gets big headlines. Imagine all the bad press Apple would get if the shoddy replacement parts was the norm.

This is what I don't understand . . . . I am a certified Apple iOS device service technician, and I ONLY use genuine/OEM parts, which in the case of the 8 Plus, would be LG Display. The difference in price between OEM and "high-copy" (Ganky, Chinese, "non-genuine") iPhone 8 Plus display assemblies is as follows:

OEM/LG Display iPhone 8 Plus Display Assembly: $25.43
                              Aftermarket/High-Copy: $22.87

It hasn't always been like this, but since the iPhone 7, LG Display has been cranking out WAY MORE panels than actual iPhones. The point is, JUST SPEND THE EXTRA FEW DOLLARS AND GET A DISPLAY THAT ACTUALLY WORKS, and more importantly, that you can actually honor a warranty on because you know where it came from.

Cellaris buys parts from the same distributor I do, and they ONLY get high-copies when they could save their customers a ton of potential issues by going with OEM parts . . . . but nope, they just want that extra scratch!!

Hence why I've taken SOOOOOOO many of their customers.

Bottom line, Apple overcharges for ANY repair. I use OEM panels and I charge $90 to replace an iPhone 8 Plus display assembly, a free tempered glass screen protector, and I give an ACTUAL 4 month warranty (for ANY issue that's not caused by impact/dropping the device, and water and/or liquid damage). Apple charges $120, and if the display craps out, it's your fault.

The moral of the story . . . . spend the extra few dollars and give your clients OEM parts. Don't be a greedy prick and use crappy parts, because THIS crap happens to crappy parts.

Good for Apple for the fix, I guess, but this may do more harm than good because now these crappy 3rd party manufacturers can continue making crappy panels that don't work expecting Apple to fix it. Apple was under NO obligation to push this fix, so be thankful.

There are a lot of techs out there like me, so don't tell me you couldn't find a shop with OEM panels for less than Apple charges. Google is your friend. And if someone claims to use OEM parts, educate yourself on how to identify high-copy parts, and demand to see the panel they claim to be OEM BEFORE they install it.

                              Rant over.

                              :-)

P.S. - It takes my less than 45 minutes to replace an iPhone 8 Plus display assembly, AND I use the OEM expandable gasket along with an OEM panel, meaning that you'll still be IP6X when I'm finished . . . . granted there aren't any other ingress points caused by the damage.

This is so simple to understand, many people spend all they can in buy their iPhone for whatever reason, for false status, because they like it more than others, to have the same phone that their friends, etc... After spend their savings, if by an accident they can't repair it cheaply or their phones are bricked. They as you can read in forums etc, swear not buy any more of their phones after suffer that treatment while if you let them repair it by third parties, they'll be pleased to consider or buy more of their phones in the future.

If they are a considerable part of my customers, what to do? Lose them forever? Or let them repair their phones cheaply and being able to sell them more phones in the future? The answer is simple, for those in particular is more profitable let them do it and sell more iPhones in the future.

Apple is being disingenuous. They aren't 'non-genuine' displays but any display not shipped with the device and refurbished with a third-party, even if using identical model displays.

But the fact is its not: Apple's repair is slow and unreasonably priced compared to third party replacement. And their tech is silly.. anything broken.. just replace board.. no troubleshooting skills.. no board repair skills.

Go service center.. be phoneless for 1 week at least + $$$$ + chance of lose data.
Go third party, at most 1 hr + $$ + all good.

They can't win legally vs third parties nor can they win milking their customers.

Note7 owner, 25 Apr 2018, I would just let these folks void their warranty agreemen... moreMore like they're having buyer's remorse for buying overpriced phones then are stuck with overpriced repairs because of Apple's A--hole and $cumbag policy of selling overpriced parts with overpriced service prices. Apple is pretty much at the lead in opposing "Right to Repair" because they won't be able to suck more $$$ from their herd if people have the freedom to have their devices repaired by independent repair services outside of Apple.
