Counterclockwise: RAM capacity through the years

We look at both the average (which is growing quickly) and the maximum (which may have hit a wall).

Appearantly the manufacturers do install the full amount of RAM (e.g. 8192MB, 6144, 4096, And so on) but since there's no Dedicated RAM for the GPU, a fraction of the RAM is being taken to be dedicated for the GPU.
Thank you for teaching me! ^_^

There is a reason why a 8gb, 4000 mah phone, lasts more, *is* faster. While a 4gb, 3000 mah "optimized" phone is actually slower and lasts less. Androids have similar levels of optimization (coming from mother google), but significant differences on hardware. Those who choose the low hardware they basiclaly choose to release a low end phone (even if its price is high end, it is still a low end offering)

Chinese are smart people, this should not be a controversial statement. I'm not a chinese even, but I tust their judgement, especially on phones. They see far and widd, an industry made of wise people.

The lack of 3.5mm adapter, the notch, the high ram, high battery, phones basically becoming rablets. All pushed by the Chinese, all clearly the future (bezels, low battery, mini sizes, 3.5mm adapter; all failed non-chinese ideas).

Anonymous, 01 May 2018I have to agree. Muktitasking is what eats ram a lot and no... moreThere is not a single 4gb phone that is not significantly slower than a 6gb phone.

It's pretty much the only important upgrade if you want a fast phone. Anything else is being lost by the fact that no more than a few apps can be stored in memory (on the low ram model).

Never understood those who buy flagships with such a low ram. Speed wise they are mid rangers (at best) you dummies. You want your flagship to be flagship level in all. Starting with ram amount (most important), storage speed (second important) and eventually ram speed (3rd important, the article got it wrong, amount is more important). SoC only comes after those and moatly if play intensive games or do cpu intenaive tasks, esle it is mostly trivial at this point... Funny to think given that it is basically the only thing they test in performance tests (the one thing that matters so very little at this point).

The game has changed in two very important ways to curb the memory bumping game.

1: it's not about blazing fast speeds, it's about being fast enough for longer periods of time. Lower power draw has taken the lead in requirements.

2: software optimization. this is largely tied to the first point. instead of relying on huge amounts of RAM to run things, they're optimizing things to actually run on smaller amounts of RAM, thus improving power management in the process

Muktitasking is what eats ram a lot and not so much mustitaskin with phones at this moment. But in future there can be more phones that replase laptops in the offices by using extrenal displays and keyboards. When those will get more popular and start really replasing laptops in the offices, then there will be Great increase In the needed ram.
So for now the 4Gb can be enough, but not for long.
It is cheaper to have a phone that replases laptop than have both so it is viable option in the future!

Average IQ of adults is 105, quite greater than the average westerner or Indian. No wonder that all the trends that make sense start in China and then are being criticized by westerners or indians ... they don't get it.

Chinese are super smart and see far (btw japanese too, which is why japan only phones were also ahead of their time, for examole first bezeless phones were japan only, sharp phones ... ahead of their times).

DRAM needs refresh. The refresh consumes power. Bigger DRAM means higher power consumption. 4 GB is enough for smart phone because it only runs maximum 1 foreground app

Most mobile quad core intels support atleast 64GB of dual channel RAM. The reason for 16/32GB max limit is device size rather than processor. You simply cannot fit more than 2 slots without taking significant hit on space. Most laptops which support 64GB RAM are either too thick/heavy or are too expensive. What Intel can limit theoretically is the amount of "banks" or "density" - i.e. not being able to use 32GB RAM sticks in a single slot even if they are available.

are you sure it is 700?
given Intel knows his CPUs way better than every one else and given your cpu is 720 : https://ark.intel.com/products/43122/Intel-Core-i7-720QM-Processor-6M-Cache-1_60-GHz or 740 : https://ark.intel.com/products/49024/Intel-Core-i7-740QM-Processor-6M-cache-1_73-GHz which none of them can support more than 8GB RAM(you can be sure with Vertical Segment be mobile which identifies CPU is a laptop one not Desktop.)
so please enlighten me that haw you could use 32GB on a CPU which was limit to 8GB?

and games may focus on ram speed and bondwith which is currently no way what manufactures currently doing.
so i guess it is ok we say we need more ram to just make the lack of speed in memory(until companies try to speed up rams)
