Counterclockwise: RAM capacity through the years

29 April 2018
We look at both the average (which is growing quickly) and the maximum (which may have hit a wall).

Sort by:

How can one work out if the phone your considering upgrading too has eMMC or UFC , since according to the article, it makes such a difference to speed. Same with LPDDR4. Or is that unnecessary concern really.

Anonymous, 29 Apr 2018At HQ of many Chinese brands ... - Hey boss! Tell us wh... moreAs always the Chinese got it right. No wonder that they have some of the highest average IQ in the world.

More RAM is by far what impacts felt performance the most. It allows for more apps to stay in memory and thus far less loading screen. Any cheapo chinse phone can feel faster than S9 (non plus) at this point because it reloads far less apps (typically 6GB of ram phones).

Another thing that the Chinese get right is the notch. Far more useful than merely having a bezel. It creates a space for notifications/bars to be tucked into, allowing (for) a bigger useful screen estate. They solve the aesthetics part by putting black background on the notification bar (so it blends with the notch).

If you want to see where things are going, leave it to Chinese, they trully see far (also the first to mostly produce phablets instead of phones ... noawadays everyone has copied them in this).

"PS. laptops are having a similar issue too, but that’s largely dictated by Intel – most mobile Intels do not support more than 16 GB of RAM. But that’s just so that you would pay extra for mobile Xeons."

What are you talking about?! All mobile Core Series processors since Skylake have supported 32GB of DDR4 (Or LPDDR3, which, in the case of Apple's typical behavior of skimping to save money and using older RAM on the new MacBooks. Truly a sh!t move).

Some Kaby Lake mobile CPU's (the 'HQ' series) support up to 64GB of DDR4/LPDDR3/DDR3L.

Nice attempt at a dig with that "Mobile Xeon" comment.

Do your research please. Remember, Google is your friend (Intel's ARK Database to be more specific).

            ;-)

[deleted post]Yes, I have soldered a shunt onto my Titan Xp recently to increase the power budget. I have also done both breadboards and other electronics in school enough to know that you have never done it yourself basing on what you're writing.
I also have enough common sense to know that chip manufacturers only sell in bulk. What you don't understand is that manufacturers sell to distributors and people are not allowed to buy directly or distributors would be mad at manufacturers and the pennies they would make selling chips to individual customers are not worth it.

If you're discouraged so easily by a comment on a website pointing out your bullshit then it's on you.

I master the Software part. I paid others to help me. Hence I made such "Fatal" mistakes on the Hardware stuff because I admit. I know nothing about hardware stuff. All I did was tweaking to fit and flashing.

[deleted post]You don't write your own "ADB files" whatever you might have meant. I'm guessing you meant ADB keys - these are generated public and private keys that are simply very large numbers that are difficult to factorise. And by the way, neither do you write a VTS log - it's generated automatically like logs tend to do. You don't "write" these things but again - if you had any knowledge of that, you'd know it.

And that's exactly why they have less ram. Top save costs while pushing profits. And it causes performance issues pushing for more upgrades

You ain't need much RAM for smartphones, unless you're using it for AR or for some computing. The later is not applicable. For games, you aren't going with a day long session with your smartphone. This is just gimmicks. Why don't you do an article on battery capacity through out the years? The companies like Apple, Samsung and LG will bring their smart phone models to a total shame.

Kiyasuriin, 29 Apr 2018All the basic ones needed. And they are set in the com.andr... moreWith this post you've confirmed that you have no idea what you're talking about.

"All the basic ones" - obvious red flag, there are no "basic" ones. It depends on the hardware you're using and APIs you're implementing. You don't have to run any apart from perf, and there is no "basic" set of tests to do.

ADB keys are not stored in android.root branch what are you smoking, these are physical files not declarations. FYI they're in /data/misc/adb/ dir. This is common knowledge. Directory not a damn branch, you've no experience with Android (hell, any OS) at all if you've confused these two which makes it extremely doubtful you could make a ROM for your device.

VTS log is NOT on the device! You should know that if you debugged your device which you clearly didn't.

Neither is makefile! You build off of it, it's not a compiled file! If you've ever used the SDK that you must have if you made your own device you would have known that as well.

And what do you mean you don't need root because you're the "OEM"? You need to sudo if you're accessing root dirs, everyone who has ever touched Linux knows that. If you're rooted in your real device open command prompt and try to access root dirs without sudo and see what happens.

And software's the easy part. There's no way you could engineer a device without even knowing what a dual channel memory is. A casual computer assembler knows more than you and wouldn't touch soldering expensive chips onto a mobile PCB. Chips that you can only buy in bulk, anyway! That includes everything from SoC to memory to goddamn display daughter board! And these manufacturers don't give a damn about your equipment, they sell in bulk because they don't care about pennies from individual customers and are legally obligated otherwise, anyway!

End this charade because it's clear that you're full of it. It was extremely easy to bait you out and you only keep proving with each post that you're not only lying about engineering an original device but also have no knowledge about the topic. You should be reported for spreading misinformation.
