Counterclockwise: RAM capacity through the years

We look at both the average (which is growing quickly) and the maximum (which may have hit a wall).

Micron only sells to bulk customers, they don't care what equipment you have, they only sell to OEMs with which they have set up legal contracts.

Better and more believable lie would be for you to say you desoldered RAM from memory sticks (lol).

People 2018: 4GB? Is that a joke? Come on, that's not enough!,

Having 5 ... moreThis is impossible, for multi-channel the memory must be the same capacity, speed and latency. 4+2+1 would not work at all. You could argue for making 2GB+2GB in tandem with 1GB for some weird flex mode but I doubt that would work terribly well, if something's like that even supported on mobile SoCs.
And the only platform on top of my head that I remember supporting triple-channel were Nehalem Xeons and their i7 rebrands, that debuted 8 years ago.

I don't want to call you out but what you see on Micron's website are not traditional memory sticks that you put in your PC but memory that you have to solder onto another PCB. And they're only available to order in bulk for OEMs to solder onto their own PCBs and sell them on branded sticks like Corsair, G.Skill etc or put on their devices like Apple, Microsoft do etc.

On mobile SoC RAM is soldered, no sticks present. This is also true for some iMacs and Macbooks (it's Apple, go figure). You only use memory sticks for modular devices like desktops, notebooks barring some ultrabooks and iMacs Pro (hopefully also in the future).

Let's t... moreThere is a lot of confusion because the term is technically wrong as a Gigabyte is used to refer to a Gibibyte in IT, as are other prefixes. SI specifies the name for each variation but hardly anyone uses it. There is no 'true' value, it's all arbitrary regardless.

It has been used that way since pretty much always and a gibibyte sounds ridiculous so it has kinda become the de facto way to refer to these sizes over the years. An industry standard as memory manufacturers refer to it even, so one have to embrace it.

So I decided to go with a much more traditional Option. 6 GB. It works wonders! :D
P.S. the sticks I got from the shop you've mentioned in the link.

xXENDER FREAKXx, 29 Apr 2018When the era of 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM smartphones came out, I... moreBecause LPDDR4 is produced with up to in increments of 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 and 32Gb or conversely 1/8GB, 1/4GB, 1/2GB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB, 3GB and 4GB. RAM in any sensibly engineered device is usually dual-channel or quad-channel on HEDT class desktops and you have to pair same size chips. So the only combinations for mobile devices that use dual-channel are 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, 6GB and 8GB. You could pull some shenanigans with stacked memory and double dual-channels to get 5GB or 7GB and so on but this is probably not worth the hassle as I haven't seen a manufacturer do that so far.

They have 1GB of RAM advertised, but merely 890 MB in true capacity, while it should really be 1024 MB of RAM.
                              Same for 2 GB (2048)
                              3 GB (3072)
                              4 GB (4096)
                              And 6 GB (6144)
                              These numbers aren't for nothing.
Memory in PC uses a base of 2 instead of 10, as 2^10=1024. While as humans we are used to think in decimals (10^3=1000)

Woah UFC storage must surely pack a punch XD

When the era of 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM smartphones came out, I wonder why isn't there any brand that sport a 5GB RAM smartphone? Even so for 7GB RAM currently after 8GB RAM is seen on smartphones. It's pretty weird, because smartphone memory doesn't only have even numbers, there are some odd numbers too, like 3GB RAM
