Counterclockwise: the brief popularity of stereo speakers

06 May 2018
High profile brands slowly adopted the stereo sound, but most are still stuck in the mono days. Some are trying to innovate, though.

It's nice to have, but I really just don't care. I mostly use headphones to listen to music or watch movies anyway. My tablet does even have stereo speakers (albeit in a useless configuration) but it rarely gets used.

Anonymous, 06 May 2018S9? Really? Samsung speakers have been a joke, don't know a... moreYeah, the S7 and S8 have nearly the same speaker quality but the S9 definitely raises the bar. It's still not as good as the Axon 7, or even the HTC M8 to be frank. Check the reviews, or see one in action in stores.

The Pixel 2 has two loudspeakers, and they're front-firing. That automatically makes it better than most phones. However, each speaker is not very big and not very loud. If you look at the iFixit/Teardowns you will actually see that the Pixel 2 does not need the bezels as it can accomodate the same speakers, like the Pixel 2XL, in a very small bezel.

The LG G7 apparently has one the largest speakers out there. And it apparently amplifies its sound by using the inside of the phone as a resonance chamber. The problem is that its still a single (ie Mono) speaker, and it is facing downwards... putting the music AWAY from your ears and easily blocked by your palms. I have yet to get some hands on, hence why I'm reserving final judgment.

The iPhone X does something similar to the LG G7, just in a smaller scale. So it is one of the better sounding phones, but shouldn't win any awards. The Sony XZ2 uses my preferred stereo-speakers and front-firing orientation. However, they have really DOWNGRADED the chamber and speakers. The older SONY Z5 was much richer and much louder. Still, the new and expensive and very underwhelming SONY XZ2 is about on-par with the iPhone X.

The Razer Phone has slightly better quality/richer sound than the ZTE Axon 7 AND the Razer Phone is also noticeably louder. But they screwed up by removing the headset port.

Aaahh.. Cherished the old times with stereo speakers.. The Moto E398 pioneered it.. Followed by the E1000 and A1000.. The loudest phone I had was the Nokia 6233.. Used it as a boombox when I'm with friends.. Sometimes I even switched off the car stereo and had the 6233 blast out my mp3 at max volume instead.. Good times.. Nokia please create a phone with the legendary N91 DAC coupled with the 6233 speakers.. It will be a godsend

I am a big fan of srereo speakers. I wish my Oneplus 3T had stereo speakers (I was using HTC One M8 and HTC One ME previously). Miss the stereo speakers in HTC devices.
Reently bought a Nokia 6270 (I had a Nokia 6270 10 years back) to compensate for the stereo speakers of my Oneplus 3T.

HTC please bring back HTC One M8 stereo speakers setup. Couple that with U series' acoustic chamber design, should wipe the floor with the competition.

I don't really care, i think the 3.5 headphone is more important, 'cause when i want to hear music non by headphones i use an external aplifier

I have a budget Lenovo Vibe K4 Note aka Vibe X3 Lite, equipped with two high quality front-facing speakers and 3.5mm jack. Win-win for me.
Why Lenovo never release a true successor is beyond me. K5N, K6N, K8N all lack awesome front stereo speakers. Bummer.
They gotta resurrect their Vibe X series and launch a successor to the high-end Vibe X3.
Vibe X4 with flagship-level camera, chipset, screen on top of superb audio system would be a winner.

I got Nokia N86 back then with AMOLED screen, stereo speaker, wide angle camera + dual LED flash, and a BUILT-IN KICKSTAND.

Something I rarely see in a phone these days.

The first phone I had with stereo speakers was the X3-00. Great phone for audio listening. After that I went for the Live With Walkman. Until today, I haven't heard of a phone with this powerful audio.
Then, after three phones without stereo speakers (and with average speaker quality), I decided to go back to the stereo setup and I'm glad with that, it's one of those specs I need on a phone. But the G7 with its audio setup could be a great option for me.

It's so sad that in 2009 the samsung omnia HD had what was closer to or possibly the best sounding speakers on a phone at the time. .. and it took them all the way until 2018 with the s9 pair to finally finally bring them back to their main phone line up.
At least they are again some of the best sounding anf poddible running for best.
