Report: Essential cancels PH-2 development and company is looking for a buyer [Updated]

24 May 2018
Due to not-so-hot sales of the PH-1, Essential is in talks of selling the company.

The damn thing was not even available in most markets. I would love to buy one but they are not available.

Poor marketing, sales and distribution. If they had sold this at 450 usd in China & india, things would have been quite different.

Anonymous, 26 May 2018Essentially FLOPPED you wont be missed!!!Oh nice comment. A company that actually gives a crap about security and software updates and you bag them.

Go back to Samsung and Huawei who don't give a crap about either.

What was the company's expectation? They need full market control in this beginning stage?

Wouldn't tagging along a spare deem inconvenient, too, especially if it's not always necessary to do so.

If you haven't experienced already, once battery is taken out, some phones do reset settings and features to their defaults. One would have to set all those up again the moment the phone is powered on with the freshly replaced battery

"He also said "no one (including me at this moment) knows what the best thing for the company will be.""

This is the single most important, and probably the only, line that definitively concludes any of your inquest about the company's direction, that is nowhere

You guys never tried to sell it. How the hell did you decide it was a failure?. A lot of people waiting for your phone outside America. Your phone and company all are good but your sales team is a utter failure. They waited soooooooo loooooong to launch the first phone. Stop whining and try again....

yet another ultra articulate money garner.

why in the world would anyone invest in company that's it main direction and product is to compete with ESSENTIALLY a same product that of already successful giant companies? And in a market that is massively saturated with product already? Even amazon couldn't break into it with their attempt a few years back with their own phone. Hello Rubin, maybe you should go start up yet another EV company? There's an original idea... (not serious)

Essential had failure written all over it from the beginning. Swallow that pill, its truth.

Sir Alucard, 25 May 2018I agree on everything except the removable b. I get that pe... moreA removable battery is the only thing that is essential on a phone apart from the screen.

Never having to charge the phone (charging a spare), never havinph"battery anxiety" (carrying a spare at all times).

Seriously autonomy is the most important things on mobiles. It cannot be solved by a big battery, because a you still have to charge it, (b) if you forget you are back to 0. Also makes the phone unecessarily big. You cannot forget to charge the spare. When you do the swap you also put the spare to charge (unless you are out somewhere).

Stallion, 25 May 2018Great hardware they just have to make the software better (... moreThe software improvements transformed it over the last 9 months. Current release is a stable Oreo 8.1, and the camera is much improved as well. Side-loading of the hacked Pixel Camera APK is possible as an alternative. It's not a class-leading camera, but then again, the phone has been available for just $460 CAD since January (until channel retail stock runs out).

Anonymous, 25 May 2018They deserve that situation. The phone design is retarded. ... moreYou don't seem to know what you're talking about - the Essential's screen is rectangular on the bottom (slightest curvature on the corners), with rounded corners on the top to match the curvature of the phone.

I said ages ago that the poor sales didn't bode well for the future products or support options. Rubbish availability outside the US didn't help

I just bought essential phone two weeks ago for 280 bucks and it was best deal ever. I love it. However I wouldn't love it for 699. That's why I won't ever buy an iPhone, I could but it's not worth it.
