PeterThePanda, 11 Jun 2018Note8 has a smaller battery because the S-pen takes up a lo... morei agree that the s pen does in fact take up a lot of room, but for the sake of an extra few mm spread across the dimensions of the phone, you still could easily fit a 4000mAh battery inside, and yes the note 7 was a nightmare, but the problem was the contacts to close together, this was a design flaw, not an issue due to the actual size of the battery which is actually fairly big as it is, the note 5 for example has a 3000mAh battery inside yet the phone is 9mm shorter, 2mm narrower and 1mm slimmer, and is only 300mAh less so surely it can be done :-)

My Xiaomi is thin and have a 4000mAh battery. A 1000 to 700 mAh difference from the most expensive phones out there (or 2000mAh if you count Apple's). I say bleep!you average phone companies and welcome inovative phone companies. I can have both without "you".

Why build a power bank capacity aka 4000~5000mAh into a phone, the modules should be more advanced in techs not only bigger battery. Let's say you use the phone with 4000mAh whole day and left 50~60% when going to sleep, will you charging your 4000mAh battery overnight? If yes, it will overcharged. If no, the next day morning will you feel the battery not enough for the day and then you have to bring along the power bank for backup that's so funny! In reality usage a well balanced battery capacity is a golden ratio.

I prefer I slim phone with a LONG battery accomplished by a proper processor not the newest greatest fastest jus a good processor the greatest is always a battery drainer go with a balanced processor then u have the best of both worlds.

My phone is 8mm thick with a battery that gives you 17+ hours of screen on time.

This debate also seems slightly out of time, when it comes to trends.
Right now, the thinness doesn't seem to be something the makers of flagship devices strive for.
Some have egen gotten slightly thicker lately.
Sure they haven't beefed them up, to be able to fit high capacity batteries inside. But as I've discussed elsewhere in the comment section, the width of the phones requires a certain amount of thinness, so it would not simply be a case of making devices thicker, and leave the rest the same.
I get if Motorola bragged about the thinness, so that the devices would be thinner with mods attached. But I don't think even they do.

I think this article misses one important factor; Power-packs.
In most cases a power-pack is a better option than carry a spare battery. It can help friends in need out. It isn't rendered useless when one change phone. One doesn't have to put in the phone to charge, and then replace it with the other battery.
Sure, it does not give instant top-off. On the other hand, keeping more than one battery, that has to be charged in the same device within the best possible charge level, will be quite the hassle, in the end many end up mostly only using one battery, and the other one is just a spare.
The idea of being able to keep a device for longer if the battery can be replaced, well, after a couple of years, there has been so much progress, and most aren't really interested in keeping their old devices as their mainly driver, and as a spare, less than perfect batterylife could be just fine... And power-packs will help one out, if it isn't.
Power-packs can often be found cheaper than reliable replacement batteries ever where.
There are many form factors, small ones that one can have in the same pocket as the phone. And larger ones, if one use bags.
There are even some with wireless charging support, that could charge ones phone, if it just placed behind it, in the same pocket. We will probably see an massive growth in that product category as more and more phones get wireless charing. Unfortunately there are some standards to keep track of, to make sure it will work.
With a wireless charger in the pocket, the phone will top up as soon as it is put in the pocket. And there are smart apps that stop the charging process when the device has reached a certain charge level and starts it again when it fall below another level, to make sure devices aren't "overcharged".

The question is a over-simplification.
Many phones today are so wide, that they also need to be thin.
The thickness could be slightly increased if the back had some curvation applied, however, that would not solve anything, as few components could actually be re-arranged to fit within that curvation and make more space for standard components.
It would require specially produced components, with ah higher components price, much higher R&D as the design process would require more revision, and more prototype tests to be carried out.
We could have less wide devices that are thicker, but the actual cubic space for batteries would not change a lot.
However if the screen isn't elongated it would be smaller. And the Screen is the biggest power consuming part of a phone. So a thicker device with a smaller screen, could give us better battery-life.
For some that would be a welcomed option. Sony kinda makes such devices. We can't judge if there is a market depending on Sony sales, because they have designed them in their particular way, with their compromises that are not the same as other maker would and that may not be to everyones liking.
I think the market is bigger than Sony sales would suggest, but I'm not sure it is a market every maker should cater to, but Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei perhaps should... If they wont, I think LG should join Sony.

Without the case on I get so scared of dropping my Nexus 6P. Not everyone prefers that extra slimness, I, myself, would much rather have a powerful battery instead.

8 mm thickness is OK. redmi note 5 pro has 4000 mAh @8.1 mm and zenfone max pro m1 has 5000 mAh @8.5 mm thickness which is great

Zenfone 4 Max, Zenfone Max, Zenfone Max Plus M1, Zenfone Max Pro M1
The Pro M1 is great: Snapdragon 636 (about as fast as Snapdragon 820) + 5000 mAH.
