Sony details its contributions to smartphone innovation in cool infographic

The infographic shows Sony's flagships that will go down in history as the world's first.

Sort by:

1) Xperia Z is not the first phone with water protection. Not even the first SE/Sony phone. Not even the first SE/Sony flagship (Xperia Acro S was released in 2012). But it was the most significant one, the one that made obvious that water protection is a basic flagship feature.
2) The article wrongly claims that Sony made the first GPS-enabled wearable (two years after Garmin's Fenix), while the picture correctly states that it was the first GPS-enabled Android Wear smartwatch.
3) 4K is still just a marketing gimmick. Even 1440x2880 is a marketing gimmick if you're not into VR. 1080x2160 is really sufficient.
That said, the latest generation of Xperia is truly marvelous, XZ2 Compact is unrivaled.

    I had a Z phone and I like Sony's rectangular design aesthetic. But those first waterproof phones were prone to leakage, so were they really waterproof? The rest of the nostalgia is moot, who cares about 4k? Ok 3d is kinda cool, if you also own a 3d printer. They need to stop living in the past and make some revolutionary devices again. Use that PlayStation money to invest in something awesome, instead of the usual "same as last year" designs.

        Apart from water resistant that truly contributes to smartphone innovation, there nothing else really. 4K display is innovation but no other brand follow their innovation thus its contribute nothing in smartphone world. GPS in smartwatch is bound to happen anyway no matter who is first. Super slow motion not really a useful feature either.

            sony might use LED display in few more years..probably LED display made by them, not LG or Samsung

Please tell me that their M.2 PCIe 980 SSD available online are throttled and all.

                    Samsung Display is not limited by Samsung Electronics. They both run separately and they both want to make profit. You'll have no problem buying their best offerings because they want to sell it.

                                I wonder what can Sony can do for the next decade.

                                Sony Xperia's last chance is the Xperia Play/Playstation and with the right pricing i'm sure it will sell like hot cakes.

                                  - No 128 GB Storage
                                  - No 3.5mm Audio Jack
                                  - No AMOLED Screen

                                  That's what I call an "innovation"!
                                  On top of this all it is very pricey..
                                  I'm not a Samsung fan but I'm also not a Sont fan to buy every terrible phone they make just because of its sony! Just bought my new S9+ and its beyond amazing with its gorgeous Super Amoled infinity screen, 128GB internal memory, 3.5mm jack and all the stuff that Sony offers in their flagships. And all this at the same price!

                                    Also, what's the so call iPhone copycat/ clone have anything to do with me? Are you a idiot?

                                    The xperia camera app may have shut down less now but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happens.

                                    Try to using it during a sunny day/ hot day ( especially in summer days). I've had use xperia Z1s, Z3 and now XZ ( all US version). They all have that problem, you can't use the camera if the device is heating up, and it is pretty easy to get to that stage as well.

                                    4G on, and use the camera to take photos during daylight time with great weather ( sunny weather). Your so call record for a few hours won't happen at well( cause you'll lose the battery faster than you can charge and the device heat up to a point where you need to restart it.)

                                        Back then ( not sure about the west, but ) in Asia, Sony's electronic capture the market in a hugh percentage (if not all). And their stuff are always in a high price. Until Samsung, LG, sharp, and many other Japanese brand also became more and more commonly known, which Sony began to fall.

                                        As of now, Sony still thinking that they're what they was. But the fact is they're no longer that. It is a Brand name that actually bringing itself down to its knee!
