Huawei working on smartphone with a display hole for the camera instead of a notch

Ash, 20 Jul 2018Firstly there is no need for a 100% stb ratio.
Secondly if... moreThere is a great need for 100% StB ratio. Phone sizes have peaked. Only way to make the screen bigger is by killing as much bezel as possible (and eventually foldable screens but them too need the bezels to have gone already)
Only thing troubling with the notch (great compromise for the time being) is that it instigated something dark in people, their inner Luddite.

Milo, 20 Jul 2018I DON'T need those extra horns on a screen, they're nothing... moreThey are everything. It is a place to put the notifications.
Nobody can live with extra bezels. Phones are big already. Extra bezels are making them uncomfortably big.
The notch costs you NOTHING apart from harming your fragile aesthetic sense (just make the notification black and stop whining).
Bezels cost you everything by making the phone needlessly big.
There is no such thing as small bezel. All bezels are too big as they all are useless.

Surely do not want hole in my screen. Use some future tech in stead of such ugliness. Same as trend with a jack, as if you could not use wireless and jack. Now you got just low quality output.
All just for Design.

Please let us have screens without any strange form of holes or cut outs !

If it's a small camera slightly bigger than the notification bar I might stomach it.
If it's big, might as well put it in the exact center of the screen and call it innovation :/

This makes more sense, since it is intended to save space, not to pretend you have an iPhone. But the concept renders of Mi MIx 2s with a camera in the upper left corner were looking much better.
Of course, there is no sense of making life harder instead of going on Meizu 15 road.

Firstly there is no need for a 100% stb ratio.
Secondly if they want to achieve this then I would prefer having camera behind a transparent oled screen which already exists in experimentation stage.
Otherwise bezels are great especially if we get front facing stereo speakers.

MdN8, 20 Jul 2018Just remove the front camera completely and put a smaller d... moreI have a feeling that huawei won't do this type Of"innovation" or design until it actually looks good, they have reputation to be maintained

The camera really doesn't have to be at the center... you can move it to the upper left/right corner, BOOM innovation, new trend of the year... this is Garbo!

Just remove the front camera completely and put a smaller display for selfies on the back. This is ridiculous.

I don't see why a hole in the display would be that different from a notch.
But I would agree that periscoping cameras are good for selfies as they can completely go away when not needed, and especially good for people that don't take a lot of selfies. They are however not that good for face unlock. On the other hand if there is no 3D mapping technology and just a simple front facing camera used for un-locking, there is no benefit to having the camera visible at all times.
All devices should have a flat, uninterrupted square at the middle of the screen that is at least 16:9, and with 1080p or better yet 4K resolution (unless the display is really small so 720p is enough for maintaining high PPI). That way notches and holes can always be bypassed.
With curved corners, there might as well be notches... They can even have one at the bottom, surrounding a home-key/fingerprint reader.

Yes, but they have mechanical parts to hide the cameras and such. We all know mechanical parts will fail (faster than non-mechanical parts), so once the mechanism fails, you'll have a hard time getting the camera's out etc. Plus, good luck getting water resistance on that.
I don't like notches either but I'd rather have a notch than a camera hidden by mechanical parts. More mechanical parts = more places for mechanical failure.
