It doesn't matter what kind of hardware Sony uses for their camera phones. Their software still ruins the photos in the end anyway. Like you buy USD7000+ MacBook Pro and then use BootCamp to install Windows XP.
Forgot to mention: the title is misleading. IMX586 is an image sensor, not a smartphone camera.

This is excellent! I hate those filthy 12MP cams they put on most phones these days.
Looking forward to see this sensor inside the Mate 20 Pro or the P30 Pro. :D

And I'm talking about XZ2 not the newly announced XZ2 Premium.

Font forget who was first Nokia 808 pure vieuw without 41 MP camera, and Nokia willheve have have 48 MP thuis year on Nokia 9 with 5 lenses,

RAYMON, 23 Jul 201848mpx of poor photos, as always.All phone cameras are able to provide good results in good light. Low light is where they struggle. So pixel size is more important than the factors you mentioned in your comments.

KamAbdi, 23 Jul 2018Nice job Sony :) As always superior to the competition They could have kept 1.4um pixel size and put a bigger sensor. That would have been actual, proper and useful pixel binning. 12MP 1.55um pixel camera was already there, they are simply wasting resources in increasing the pixel count. They should have at least made a 12MP camera with 2.0um pixel. That would have been some achievement. They suck because they just market something special and deliver a garbage

I rather them have an identity, visually.
And I'd take front facing speakers anyday over the overhyped screen to body ratio numeral which is pointless if your phone looks good nonetheless.

Huawei did a great job of reminiscing old but gold technologies in the past and try to improve upon them. And it's quite a shame that it took a once underestimated Chinese brand to force the big boys to do something new and better.
Samsung has been playing it safe, even Apple is taking some more risks.
It's about time we get more for the asking price of our phones.

Shanti Dope, 23 Jul 2018Yeah it is. 1/2.3" is pretty close to 1/2" anywaySensor size .3" quite a gap...its like u said P20 Pro use 1/2" sensor size instead of 1/1.7" lol....but no worries, i love that camera on smartphone nowadays competes very fast to each other. Technologies are fast. Maybe P20 Pro triggered other companies to stepped up their game.

If you had any idea about camera sensors, you'd say otherwise.
Sony dominates the market when it comes to making camera sensors for phones, action cameras, DSLRs, advanced scientific imaging equipment, etc.
Their phone cameras suck, not because of the hardware, but because for some reason, they do a piss poor job of optimising the software - I really don't get why tho------------ their mirrorless cameras are in a league of their own.
