Sony to buy off Ericsson's shares in their joint mobile business

06 October, 2011
If that's true, there's an intriguing future ahead for Sony Ericsson, or should we say just... Sony now?

Sony and Ericsson have a big names in the electronics field industries. Their partnership is really nice but to be honest they didn't compete the other manufacturers like iPhone and Samsung. Either they stay together or get separated we wish really that they become number one in the mobiles industry because we like both.

Sony is a lame duck brand now. They are just not superior in any market or product line. But they seem to think that they are. Going it alone as a brand wont work! It will fail. I cant believe we are gonna loose SE AND MOTOROLA basically at the same time. Kinda sad, but I guess all markets change over time.

hey guys don't do this, by breaking this partnership you will lose a lagre number of loyal customers. None of u can survive alone in this super competitive mobile market. Jst bcoz of u 2, ur mobiles r enjoying an unmatched music quality, super cameras and almost brilliant displays, if any 1 of u do this then ur products wil lose their quality, their popularity and the faith of ur customers which they have in you guys. Plz don't do this! botht of u complete each other! Otherwise u guys r gonna lose every thing.

Ericsson contributed virtually all they could for the joint venture to be the best but sony on the other hand were busy contributing walkman and cybershot logo's while their own gadgets enjoy the main components eg sound chips, camera lenses, oled sreens etc what stops them from importing those components to SE? or do you want to compare a walkman phone from SE to a walkman player from sony? look at what sony did to xperiaplay! because we've andriod today sony wants to break up! well you will fail! pls i want you guys to remember when sony recorded their last profits? sony is going down.if they split i'll go Nokia's way.

Either time to divorce or kill your spouse! Sony used to be my best brand, but look at the spec of Arc etc, it's miles away to Sammy, sad....but hope it will revive "without" Ericsson...

I have had 3 Sony phones (I mean sony erricson), Absolutely loved each one of them.
The 3rd one was P990-a great phone.
After which i have had a Iphone 3gs, a Nokia & now use Sammy GS2.

I am actually missing their ph.
Let me key it down here that no one comes close to Sony's sheer Quality.

True that Sony with all it's expertise in manufacturing top of line electronic gadgets really sucked in the mobile phone market.

Ericsson back then truly had pretty queer designs that would either wow or dismay the market, however mobile phone innovation was always an Ericsson trademark and they manufactured handsets and accessories which were way beyond their time. No walkman phone yet but there was the t68m with hpm-10 mp3 player. No cybershot phone then but you always got the mca-10 view to snap pictures even on a grayscale T39m or R520m.

                  Not too greedy now Sony.

                  Sony's just too greedy.

I love SONY ERICSSON and I'am using its products for last 5 yrs. And I don't have any problem with them. So I don't wish this to happen ever.

Sony don't seem to learn from mistakes. They once produced Mobile phones but poorly sold and so they decide to joint venture with Ericsson to survive in the market. It was a bad choice, however they were never competitive against top 3 makers Nokia, Samsung and LG. They don't have any widely recognized or successful model that the other top 3 have. I think it's just wasting money, time and efforts for pointless vision.

Remember before Sony Ericsson it was actually Ericsson that did better in terms of global market share. The fact is, Japanese phones only do well in Japan. Look at Panasonic, Sonys acknowledged main rival. Their phone do well in Japan, but simply don't exist outside that market. One poster said the Japanese phone makers just don't understand how to make phones and interfaces to European tastes. I agree with that comment. Japanese people are very tech savvy - they can use complex phones in a way that the rest of the world can't. They adopt new tech/features fast and learn it quickly. Take NFC and e-wallets for example. In Japan its huge. But in the rest of the world, its just not catching on. So if it goes all Sony, the phones will inevitably be more Japanese in flavor. And slowly but surely, they will fade away.

The only way I could accept this as positive would be if the ownership was balanced 60-40 Sony to Ericsson - that would mean it would be Sony in brand, but keep the Ericsson tech and European influence.

If Sony takes complete control and the company loses its European influence then it will go down the drain. Japanese companies are good at reliable tech, but poor at understanding people outside Japan and developing software and user interfaces to understand European tastes.

Rohan Singh, 07 Oct 2011I don't want this partnership to come to an end. Sony Erics... moreThe company will likely remain Sony ericsson because they want to maintain its brand image with which many loyal customers associate their products with. As the writer suggests, they're bidding for part of Ericsson's shares in the company, not all of it, but will still give Sony the majority share and power. It may be 75:25, to 51:49.

Hi i hope this happens and happens quick. I am still waiting for a phone from Sony as good as their other products like monolithic design led tvs, Sony tablets, nex cameras, playstation 3 and vita, vaio laptops etc. I think sony has the talent and expertise to make a gadget like iphone. with their phone line up i think that classy Sony touch is lacking. They really need to make a classy phone to compete with apples iphone. their xperria arc is a very good looking phone but with the 3 buttons on the bottom n that sensor on the top and the plastic used is little disappointing and unlike Sony. They can very well make a gadget as drool worthy as apples iphone but they need to do it fast. The competition is very tough nowdays.
