Sony to buy off Ericsson's shares in their joint mobile business

06 October, 2011
If that's true, there's an intriguing future ahead for Sony Ericsson, or should we say just... Sony now?

I do not think that people understand what Ericsson has contributed to Sony Ericsson brand?

Sony made poor and strange looking phones before the merge, the quality was the weak point for Sony!

Ericsson made very high quality phones but with not so modern design.

I think that most of the phone tech and patents comes from Ericsson and the camera and multimedia things comes from Sony in their phones today.

Ericsson is Swedish and Sony is Japanese, together they make very good phones but I think if they split up Sony is the looser and nobody seems to know it outside Sweden?

The link is on the bbc website here it is: interesting this.... maybe the Ericsson name isnt really giving good vibes anymore, no matter what I will always get behind Sony Ericsson or Sony or whatever. It lasted 10 years and was the longest lasting joint ventures, remember Benq / Siemens? thats was one that was very short!

Does that means there wont be Sony Ericsson phones in the future (as they will be named Sony only)?

Not sure that this is such good news for SE fans. Ericsson has a massive telecoms patent portfolio which benefits the joint-venture immensely.

IMO most of the good stuff over the years has came from the Ericsson side of things. Both partners would be better putting more into the joint venture as they can both bring benefits that benefit the whole much more than either can bring individualy. e.g. Sony hasn't been pulling its weight and should be putting more effort into integrating SE phones with other Sony products and tech. It is also weird that they haven't been using ST-Ericsson chipsets more from the Ericsson side. Would make more sense if both could see the bigger picture and both contribute more $$$.

SE also happened initially because Ericsson was cash-strapped due to a Philips chip plant fire in Mexico. Sony provided the cash and Ericsson the tech. Now Ericsson is sitting on a large stash of cash and Sony is losing billions - would actually make more sense for Ericsson to buy out SE than Sony!
