Sony to buy off Ericsson's shares in their joint mobile business

06 October, 2011
If that's true, there's an intriguing future ahead for Sony Ericsson, or should we say just... Sony now?

for me this is only a tactic of the 2 companies to make it only 1 so people will think that sony is growing and its a stable company (which of course it is) but anyway to cut things short for me this is only a strategy...

but cool show on tv the sony lifestyle wow all of the best tech they have every episodes

Late decision by sony, this move will cost them so much and may end up bankcrupt. Anyway, let us wait and see, sony had started to manufacturer of phone as a sole brand (failed) and now coming back with the same sole brand (???).

My guess is that Ericsson was only interfering and slowing Sony - that's why current SE devices are not cutting edge with their specifications, and why SE lags way behing Samsung with it's speed-to-market with new specifications of the hardware.

I think that Sony needs to lead the company, and kick out Ericsson's managers. Every time I saw an interview with the current (swedish) CEO of SE, I thought that this man has bad or slow judgement, and that he is not good enough to lead the company. He is like an opposite of what Steve Jobs was...

I don't know why I am not so happy to read this. my first cellphone was an ugly Ericsson given by my friend. but I like Sony too, for it's audio products. for phone quality I prefer Ericsson more even they're not stylish, but Sony makes a different exception on me with Walkmanphone. that's why I love Sony Ericsson, not only Sony or not only Ericsson. however, I just wish it will be better if it should happen.

I wonder how Sony will call name phones now. Just Sony?
The word "Sony Ericsson" has a nice ring to it. :-)

Ericsson T28 world, T28, T39, T68 and Sony Z7/C6/C7 and the first walkman phone.

Call me old fashioned but I really do miss the classics and the old days. Hopefully Sony will make something good out of this.

I think Sony are using this as a opportunity to gain back that much needed market share from Apple, which i think needs to happen or they will be like Siemens, and bow out quietly.

As for Ericsson I dont think they will be affected as they are awesome in other telecommunication fields but back then they needed help which Sony did but its only a matter of time before the joint partnership would split due to where they want to go.

Either way I want Sony / Ericsson to remain key players in this industry.

i Ericsson starts making their own phones again, this might be a good thing....
Ericsson could focus on quality phones, for the workman, and the active people. Few companies dares to do that. Sure there is the Active coming from SE. And motorola have their Defy.
But I think there needs to be a brand, more focused on it. Now it only one model here, one model there... and some are not really that high quality, just looks like it. And how about speakerphone capability, and ringtones in noisy enviroments.
And how about the ability to control the phone with gloves on.

The dynamism offered by the combination of European and Japanese ways of thinking was the company's strength. The European mindset was something that set SE apart from its competitors.

Sony buying it over will destroy the company. Sony is a behemoth that is losing $$$billions and part of this I believe is due to its insular Japan/US only mindset.

And just when things were picking up for them with the new XPERIA line-up. However, I do agree with the post below that Sony have gone through a radical change from ten years back. Maybe we'll get to see many high-quality products from them. Or maybe not. Let's see how this one pans out.

I used to own a Sony CMD Z7, it was a horrible handset, then I jumped on to a Ericsson t-18 clearly there were huge differences. I think this will be a marketing move so they put their future handsets into the Sony Stores and their portfolio. Sony also have learned from Ericsson, look at their new Tablets, this is the new breed Sony and I wouldnt be surprised Ericsson assisted in developing the tablets too. When Sony did manufacturer their own handsets that was over 10 years ago so I think they have moved with technology.
